New car hot smell

Featured Replies

Never had a new car before so this might be perfectly normal.

Just picked up our 150 tdi l&k estate this morning and it's now done 55 miles. when I switched it off and got out after a decent run there was a hot metal smell like you'd expect with binding brakes etc. Anyone know if this is to be expected? Dealer didn't mention it at the handover.

Fan was running now you mention it. Assumed DPF regen was about dirty/clogged filter though.

If the fan was running it would of been a DPF regen.. maybe the first one

Also... i found the brakes stunk for the first hundred or so miles while they bedded in and the pads settled

It sounds to me like you're describing the smell of a hot new exhaust. The oils used to coat new exhausts burns off during the first hundred or so miles, and stinks exactly as you describe. It'll settle down either way, don't worry about it.... Unless you see flames. If you see flames, run away. :D

I agree with Rainmaker - its highley likely to just be the exhaust burning. I've had the same smell on most new cars I've had. Should be fine...

Do check for rear disc wear as a few guys on here know mine were binding and badly scored and were reluctantly replaced by Skoda.

Remember you need to flag up all snags within the first 5,000 miles for FOC work.

250 miles now and the smell's totally gone.

Good to know about 5000 miles snag limit though!
