Yeti never to be bettered

Featured Replies

I believe that for every one of the (insignificant number in terms of the mass market) members on here who can't stand the shape of the Karoq, there are no doubt thousands of potential buyers who will love it and go on to buy.  There is an obvious reason why all mass market cars look similar and that is because they sell.

As I've said on here before, mass market manufacturers only make cars that sell and that doesn't include "quirky" ones.  The buyers of such cars are not their target market.

On a personal level and at the risk of being taken out and shot, I have to say I much prefer the look of the Karoq (and the Kodiak) to both iterations of the Yeti and much more so in relation the the pre-FL one.  As always, the saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is forever true.

  • I think it is interesting that over it's lifetime annual sales of Yeti's increased every year. It's also interesting how many former owners rushed to but a 'new' old Yeti before it was discontinued -

  • I'll take the YETI any day

Yeah, like I said, we went to see the Citroen, and liked it a lot, but we prefer an automatic, and their range did not include that option, otherwise I'm pretty sure we'd have been interested.

As it is, the Yeti with DSG and a bit higher off the ground suits our needs perfectly. :)

Fortunately, being brand new, it will last us a good few years. Hopefully, in that timescale we'll see some better cars come onto the market that  put versatility of use above media led style.

I think you're right X19...But it's like everything else in life. If you brainwash people , via media advertising, into believing that these SUV things will go up and down mountains, across deserts, moors and through swollen rivers, across swamps full of alligators and will carry 4 bikes, a large  smiley ☺ family and 2 dogs, then people will believe it and buy them. But most people I suspect, never do those things.

I do think that the Yeti owners who are not enamoured with the Karoq because it is, well, just bigger have a point. The uniqueness of the Yeti was space efficiency, good interior space within compact external dimensions. It is very difficult to identify a replacement vehicle from any manufacturers that meets the space efficiency test of the Yeti, and believe me, I looked before buying my new Yeti in March. Perhaps the Fabia based proposed crossover will be a contender.

For me the Karoq and Ateca are just too big.

Everyone is different.  One of the reasons I sold my Yeti was because the cargo area (with the rear seats out as I always had mine) just wasn't big enough.  Hence changing to the CR-V.

Now if the Kodiak or the Karoq had been about then it might have been a different story.

Exactly, some need a bigger vehicle inside and out. Others, like me, don't need or want, a bigger car. The point I was making is that there are many crossovers that are bigger than the Yeti - Karoq size'ish - but few (if any) crossovers with the Yeti interior/exterior dimensions.

If I might expand on this just a little?  Add the Yeti's mechanical/electronic alternatives (FWD/4x4/DSG/manual etc) and the competition disappears.  A 'Fabia SUV' might be the opportunity for Škoda to re-visit this niche market, but it would now be far too late to be of more than possible academic interest to anyone around my age!

Brijo, I generally keep cars about 6-7 years so will be late 70's when my Yeti is due for replacement, I hope to get another car in after this one so will wait and see what 2023/24 brings - probably hybrid I expect. I see you are a 16" wheeler as well as me.

And that pretty much sums up why VAG moved away from the size.

Although perfect for you, it's not a seller compared to the alternatives customers will be looking at.

I've got a year or two or three on you, then, and if this 1.2 is good it might realistically be my last.  Re wheels, see my signature and perhaps take a trip down memory lane with this topic  :

Mmmm.........looks like a Skoda grill at the front.

i assume that the 5.3 in the model name refers to the Combined MPG?

Yes, and you need your own petrol tanker following you down the motorway!

Wonder what happened to "The Plumber"? Last I heard he was driving a Spaceback after having back problems with the Octavia he bought after the Yeti.

Seems he hasn't posted since October '16, though he did visit back in February.  You don't miss them at first, do you?

:wondering:

The Plumber was always a learned source of all things technical about the Yeti, and non Yeti. Gave me good advice about getting 16" wheels as well.

I can see that but the Audi Q2, Peugeot 2008, Mazda CX-3 etc. etc. are all Yeti length and the awaited VW T-Roc (Golf based crossover) will also be Yeti length. So clearly there is a big, and growing, demand for Yeti length vehicles.

Maybe the Hyundai Kona will suit some as another alternative.

Looks like it will be another marmite vehicle appearance wise but with the boot space and engine choices to suit.

You do not see the exterior when driving a vehicle anyway unless admiring it in shop windows or seeing others on the road.

I might not see the outside when driving but if every time I look at it I shudder then that's not good for the soul. We all like to drive something that we find attractive, don't we?

Fugly cars are usually fun cars & often practical and draw fanboys & girls to them. eg being a Yeti or Fabia.

Roomster was fugly - but I loved mine.  Fun, quirky and practical.

Easily the best car (as opposed to SUV) I have ever owned.

But fugly isn't ugly - exactly my point!

Interesting that the article says the Karoq will be cheaper than the Yeti.

I wonder how many will accept that over a hankering for what's been lost?

Not us,  for sure. Absolutely 100% not.

We looked at a large number of cars before finding the Yeti, and would probably have bought  an older, more versatile second hand vehicle had we not found it because at the moment, the new model  UK car market just has nothing to appeal at all. We got SO bored trailing from showroom to showroom basically seeing the same tat.

I take the view that customers visiting showrooms, have a pretty non negotiable idea of what they like and dislike when they go to spend circa £20k, and although being quite happy  to embrace new technologies, you are never going to get customers like me to buy a shape of car that I actually find totally repellant.

We set out with a budget of up to £28k, and there is just nothing out there now. It's just a sea of completely  boring lookalikes. Just glad we spotted the Yeti Drive and knew immediately that it was the one for us. Marmite or not, it's perfect for the driving and travelling that we do, and we do a lot.

The SKODA  and VW bean counters and designers can spin it any way they want to....but businesses (and I've had one or two) rarely if ever retain customers by ignoring them. They can, and do, go elsewhere.

?

Had you no interest or need for a YETI from 2009-2017 like many others, just getting one at the end of their production.

How are used prices looking on YETI's now as people are trading in or buying a used one.

Is there an increased demand with waiting lists at Main Dealerships for vehicles arriving, and are Dealership Sales Staff calling up owners saying

'We want your Yeti', there is a shortage for the huge increased demand?

I GET all of that. Really I do.

We did need a bigger vehicle before this one as it happens,  due to having a  severely disabled member of family, but the Yeti was a shade too small for that use.

But as a final word on the subject, I reckon that the Yeti, or a similarly shaped vehicle WILL make a huge comeback.... and regardless of the manufacturer, that's where we will probably spend our cash.

Happy Yeti'ing!
