Maxidot and Columbus update

Featured Replies

I just bought a superb mk2 with a Columbus satnav. I updated the firmware to 4125 as per this site and now my multi dot display does not show the navigation or audio options. Really disappointed in myself. There's clearly a communication issue but I've no idea what to do now to fix it. I see some people are talking about activating the bap (what's this?) or using something called vcds. Any help greatly appreciated. I'm living near Godalming if someone can help?

I've not heard of a 4125 software version. Maybe you mean something else?

No matter, you're possibly correct about the BAP thing. The Columbus update you did will have wiped the coding from the unit (the string of data which the unit was using to determine the settings needed for your car). You'll need someone with VCDS (a laptop and diagnostic software) to recode the unit so it'll work correctly. You're too far away from me, but check the VCDS users thread here and see if someone local will help you out.

Thanks Rustynuts. I feel like a right plonker. It was version 4120 that I installed. Everything works on the Columbus and the Multidot works but they do not seem to be communicating with each other. I'll have a look at the VCDS user list. Thanks.

As I recall, updating to version 4x on the older RNS-510 units, in most cases required re-coding. For the Columbus, there was a specific issue with the maxi dot no longer working on the 4120 FW which could either be fixed with coding, or flashing a fix file.

Since it is not allowed to link to other site, google this:"volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-and-information" and take the first my-gti page. There is a small iso fix file to download under "fixes".

Burn that file and stick it in the unit. That "should" set it up.

It's unlikely to need the Skoda fix as that's specific to the Octavia, and this is fitted in a Superb. It'll just be recoding needed I suspect. Usual disclaimer applies, I don't recommend throwing fixes or firmwares at the unit in the hope of fixing an issue.

Thanks guys, unfortunately the fix did not work. I have downgraded to 3xxx as I thought before reading the replies that it might help. I'm looking for VAGCOM help in my area. Thanks for the input. Wish I'd know before I did this. Oh well. Thanks again.

I’m near Folkestone and have VCDS & VCP if you do not find anyone closer.

Out of pure interest Gizmo, what would need correcting using Vcds?

It’s been a few years since I have needed to code a Columbus but in that case all it needed was to code the car so it knew it had sat nav and therefore would display the details on the maxidot.

This is great info, as ever, folks.  I had to try a firmware update as my unit was cutting out, running slowly, not remembering destinations and redrawing so slowly that I was missing junctions while the screen updated!

Update went well, with maps left alone, which was a bonus, but my maxidot has stopped communicating, so I will check out the VCDS holders in the Somerset area.
