OCTAVIA vRS diesel - looking at buying

Featured Replies

Hi all

Ive been looking at a diesel since I got my new job. Can't believe I forgot about the vRS.

Few things I'd like to ask...

Real world mpg.. It seems the petrol is capable of 30+ mpg (bit surprised by that actually) and diesel ive only seen quotes figures of 50mpg. I do mainly motorway miles and a bit of town. I think the petrol is out of the question.

Anything to look out for when viewing - can't decide if I want the hatch or estate yet, however I think I'm right in saying that I want the CR engine. Are all face lift models CR engines? I havnt read too much in to it yet.

Mileage - my budget is quite restricted if I want a face lift model. They all seem to be 125k + so I may save for slightly longer to go for a lower mileage one. Anything else that seems to go around this milage? Turbo etc?

Dsg gear box - worth it? Anything more likely to go wrong over a standard manual? Parts more expensive?

Options - what does a standard vRS come with? I've only seen one car with full leather. With either upholstery do heated seats come standard? Does cruise control come standard? Xenons?

There's probably more I need to ask but just wanted to get some basic Info from people who will know the cars better than me.

I am selling my mk2 focus st. Not many cars come close to matching the equipment and fun for the money. Think I've decided on the vRS diesel - just a matter of finding the right one.

Is there much on the market for maps for the diesels? What about other modifications such as intercoolers etc?

Thanks

Lots of questions in there.

The FL vRS should all be CR.

The petrol is capable of ~40MPG on motorway, easy driving but mixed driving for me including a fair bit of shorter trips in the cycle is more like low 32-34s.

Not sure of real world diesel economy maybe 45 mixed?

The 6SP wet clutch DSG is a pretty good unit, but yes, it is more expensive should things go wrong. Genuine clutch packs for example are near to £500 for parts only and not all mechanics are certified to fit them or the LUK aftermarket equivalents.  It needs oil and filters every 40k and this is £180 at a dealer. The mechatronic unit - lets not go there....

I would hold out for the the FL, it is a newer looking / feeling car IMO.

Leather wasn't standard, heated seats not standard,  Xenons weren't standard, Auto lights Wipers wasn't standard, parking sensors / PDC wasn't standard. Cruise was standard, climate control on FL should be standard AFAIR, Bolero standard on FL. MFSW not standard and only on DSG AFAIR, curtain airbags not standard. Maxidot not standard (except on DSG)......  There are some exceptions like limited run models - the blackline for example which has a pre-determined option level.

Edit: Also be aware there may have been some changes to standard equipment through life cycle.

Attached is an excerpt from the early 2010 brochure with specs, prices and options list which might give you a full picture of the equipment level.

Lots of maps. Shark, Revo......

Thanks for the reply.

Looks like I've got some homework to do then. Doesn't look like they come with a lot of standard equipment. I've got till the end of the month when I trade mine in.

I havnt heard of shark before and revo maps don't seem to be as good as other companies in the focus st world. Stuff like that can be looked at later down the line.

I read somewhere that servicing was every 10k miles? I will read the pdf later and see if it mentions it.

You have to be joking about petrol mpg figures?  You get 40mpg in a petrol? I'm not saying it's not possible.... Just find it a bit hard to believe.

I am averaging 28mpg in my car. Ford says it can reach 38mpg (only ever had that figure once or twice).

So ur petrol vrs... You reset your trip, go on the motorway at 70mph with cruise on... What do you get roughly? ... If your average mpg (combined) is that high in a petrol then I may just have a think before going for the diesel if I'm only gonna get 5-10 extra mpg. Will wait for a diesel owner to have their say.

How many miles have you had out of a full tank if petrol?

I have the vrs diesel and as for mpg you can easily get over 50 on the motorway I did a 9 mile trip yesterday where the a1 was a 70mph then dropped to a 50mph and I achieved just over 51mpg so on a longer run I think it could be a bit more as for a full tank I got about 400 mile but that wasn't driving very economical with just getting it

The vRS isn't a high spec Octavia. For the FL versions, it's based on the lowest spec 'S' and apart from it having the most powerful engine choices, other changes are mostly cosmetic.

The most obvious 'vRS only' additions when compare to the rest of the range are:

- Bigger wheels

- Exterior styling

- LED DRL

- Lowered 'sports' suspension

- XDS

The most obvious extras missing from the vRS are:

- Auto dimming rearview mirror

- Auto wipers

- Bluetooth

- Folding mirrors

- Front/rear parking sensors

- Light assistant (auto lights with coming home/leaving home)

- Maxidot (more advanced trip computer) <-- should be on a DSG vRS

- MDI interface (USB sticks/iPod etc)

- Multi function steering wheel <-- should be on a DSG vRS

- Satnav

- Xenons with AFS

On fuelly, most TSi vRS seem so be 30-35 MPG and TDi are closer 45-50 MPG.

The decision you need to make is spec or performance. The most powerful non-vRS engines are the 140PS TDi and 160PS TSi, both can be remapped to vRS levels but obvious a vRS will remap higher.

My CR140 can easily get 65+ MPG on motorway runs and the best I've had from a full tank is 791 miles (~63 MPG). Over the last 64k it's averaged 55 MPG but that includes plenty of stop/start city driving and I don't dawdle. I'd hope a TDi vRS would get within 10% of that in similar conditions.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like it's a diesel then.

Last thing on options that hasn't been mentioned :-

Heated seats. Are these available - even with full leather trim?

Sunroof - would love one but seem to be vare.

Estates - there seems to be quite a big dip on the boot. Is there a false floor available so that the opening is flush?

It seems as though I could be looking for a long time to find the right spec car. I don't have a clue about trim levels of any manufacturer apart from Ford.

I'm wondering if there are any owners club classifieds that I may find a cheap, good spec an well looked after one...

Thanks everyone for the replies. Will look in to a bit more when I get time. Seems as though it's the next car for me though... Blue or red... I did see a green one that looked pretty good.

So with mixed driving i'd expect low to mid 30s!  I have seen 40MPG (trip computer) a few times at about 65mph on motorways / A roads. Probably the best out of a tank about 450miles which is more like 37mpg calculated. Clearly you don't get 40MPG for long unless continuing with economy style driving.

OK. I havnt seen any real world figures and owning a hot hatch myself, I know it's very difficult to reach the stated mpg.

I think either way the diesel is looking very interesting for me at the moment. Lower tax, lower insurance, lower fuel bills.

Heated seats were standard on the L&K, they might have been added as an optional extra and were available for both fabric and leather seats.

Sunroof was always a paid for option so will be rarer as a result.

You can get a variable/false floor for the boot of the estate and hatch to flatten it.

There is a for sale section here.
