Extreme tyre wear!!!

Recommended Posts

So, I'm running 17" OEM wheels and tyres... had them on for 12 months if that... had an MOT end of march with no mention of tyres... today I get my tracking checked and leave with two new tyres!

Get the car on a hunter wheel alignment machine.

So having had the tyres changed and rotated and the tracking done just over a month ago, I thought I better get the alignment checked... Took your advice and went to a hunter alignment (formula 1 Cheltenham)... Here's the result:

Apparently the rear is fixed and not adjustable in the slightest :(

Good job you changed them, you might have got a ticket as they look dangerous. One looks much worse than the other.

Yeah, it really surprised me as I'd only had the MOT in march! May the tyres and alignment and now end of June alignment again :(

If I were you I'd register on WIM forum here and post your alignment results for Tony to have a look at. He can tell you more about the car than anyone else just by looking at those pics I'd guess.

I picked up on that to, they tell me it's the same for both...?

Erwin has detailed alignment geometry data for Octy2&3 (Section 44), but the Rapid (Section 44) download I have has no geometry data.

Anyone have geometry data to share?

And here is the after...

Still looks very red...

I've lowered cars in the past and had to use either adjustable strut top mounts or modified lower control arms to avoid consuming tyres at a fast rate.

For the rear it was usually washers or shims between the stub axle and beam.

Front suspension is like Polo 6R , so it may be possible to fit Polo 6R camber adjusting top strut mounts (which do exist).

Rear suspension looks like Golf Mk4, and I've seen Golf owners adjust the rear geometry using shim plates or washers between the stub axle and axle beam. (for camber and toe change)

Possible for rear:

Possible for front:

I've been thinking about fitting Eibach lowering springs but if that causes increased tyre wear ( I do 20K miles a year!)

I'm not sure I will now?

I'm not sure I can blame the wear on the springs. More likely the speed bumps in my area putting the tracking out. I now get it checked every few months and it's always out.

I have an MX5 which needs all 4 wheels aligned in all dimensions (castor, camber, toe). When I bought the car I had the alignment done by a garage becasue it felt wrong.

6 months later it felt wrong agin so I had the alignment checked by another garage, recommended by a relative who has his sprint car aligned there. Tracking was out so they realigned it.

I've had the tracking checked every 6 months by that same garage, and it's never needed doing since. I was so surprised that I took it to another specialist to have the tracking checked - spot on.

I've had the car 7 years and drive around Birmingham a lot in it...

All I'm suggesting is, are you sure that when the alignment is done, things are being tightened up properly?

I think your right, it's about finding somewhere you trust!
