Yamaha MT09?

Featured Replies

I know a few on here have the Tracer version, anyone tried the normal MT09? I was casually looking on the Yamaha website and noticed the MT09 with it's recent updates. Read a few reviews, sounds good and seems to offer decent value for money.

No tbh, but it isnt much different.

The throttle mapping is sorted out for 2017 on the new standard MT09 (its now the same mapping as the Tracer, before it was apparently snatchy).

Slip and Assist clutch, which feels alot lighter than the normal clutch, i must say.

However.. the forums say that the 2017 09 LED headlights (the ones that are trying to look like the MT10's) are really rubbish in the dark. Someone uploaded a video and basically as soon as he dropped into a corner, there was no light on the road what so ever pointing where he wanted to go. Shocking. Especially shocking because the Tracer LED's are the best i've ever experienced on a bike tbh.

Have a test ride if you're interested mate. The triple engine is just brilliant tbh. So linear. You can come out of a roundabout in 5th gear at 20mph n open up n it just pulls past everything and keeps going up to over 140.

Oh and take a look at the XSR900. Basically a standard MT09 but with a few retro bits and bobs. They're well detailed... i quite like them tbh.

Had an extended test ride on one before buying the R3.

One should be careful carrying a pillion and giving it welly as it can start to rotate/wheelie on the aggressive mapping, which at 55/60 mph as 1st hits peak power was disconcerting first time.

Loved it though compared to MT07 and MT10.

Have not heard one with a good exhaust except the Dark Side show one (I was at this Brum event).

Thats just the torque.. you should be careful accelerating like that with any pillion on any bike :D

My anti-wheelie is always kicking in 1st second and 3rd when i give it the beans. They're well known to be wheelie happy!

They do an Akro which is nice.. but its £1k from the dealers. I've kept my standard can.. i feel like i've had enough of being stupid noisey after the Ape :D

Nice one, I love the look of the XSR but it looks a bit small for me, the MT09 is suppose to have a bit of a supermoto feel about it's riding position which sounds good.

I'll have to go test one, not sure I like the sound of the headlights though lol.

Is it only the wet (mode 3/TC3) that has anti-wheelie and is that only on the MT09 and 10 then???

Don'th think I be managing it on the R3 as it has a longer wheelbase than the R1 and R6 and a lot less power of course but I am OK with not wheeling.

My FZ6 has a lower standing quarter time (11s) than the R6 (11.2s) of the time as it did not wheelie and much as an R6 I gather.

Been a pillion on the back of grr's Sport Tracker..... it does have a tendency to lift the front wheel when giving it some.

He has an Akrapovic exhaust, boy is it loud! Sounds lovely on run over:)

Not ridden it myself yet, but as Fabiamk2se said, soooo much torque.

All modes have the anti wheelie i think. My anti wheelie is turned off when the TC is turned off though. The TC just cuts the power to the back wheel slightly to keep the front down.

You could still wheelie the R3 off the clutch... its just power wheelie's we're talking here. Grab a handful and the 900's will come up pretty easily. Not quite as easily as the Tuono.. but surprisingly not that far behind. I think its down to the torque and the dimensions of the bike.

Sounds like he must of had the baffle out of the Akro then! lol. They are loud with it out. Just a nice tone with it in, in my opinion.

The torque curve on the dyno's for the 900 triple (which is actually an 850 by the way) is pretty must flat. So flat that with my exhaust being pretty quiet.. its not that easy to tell when you're running out of revs sometimes. It just pulls the same all the way through. Never had an engine like it tbh!

Yeah the baffle is out... he wants to be heard (more like wants to make old grannies jump out of their skin :D )

Being loud is safer.. but it does get on your tits after a while :D

The new Akra's are designed so the baffle can't be removed without getting the power tools out and they're not that loud either, nothing like the bark I had on the KTM 990 even when it had the baffles in.

The weigh saving and build is still top notch though.

Loud enough to do your tits in on a long run though.

I had twin Delkavics and then twin Arrows on the Tuono and it didnt matter what i did with that it was always obnoxiously loud. They just arent designed to be quiet. It's a big Vtwin thing as much as anything i'd say.

I couldn't ride the 990 for any kind of distance with baffles out, combined with the open Motohooligan airbox and it soon become tiring. It was also loud enough to set car alarms off. Despite all the noise drivers would still pull out on you.

The new Akra's aren't that much better sounding than standard on some bikes. Plenty of KTM 1290 and 1190 riders disappointed after having Akra's on other bikes. Mine came with a Wings end can which is every bit as good my previous Akra's and still sounds great even with the baffle in. Very limited in what bikes they make for though.

Complaints about the baffles being spot welded on the inside as well the usual outside. This has had people drilling out rivets to remove the end cap just to get to the weld.

Have you done any kind of distance with those Givi Ali panniers you got? How did you find them as I was looking at them in J&S and for the price they appear to be a bargain.

Does sound a pain in the backside having to drill rivets n the lot to get it out!

Not really used them yet tbh. I'm going on a 4 day trip around Scotland on the 20th of this month so that will be the first time properly using them tbh. Funny you say that, i've actually put the rack on tonight (only a 1 minute job) as im going to nip to the dealers some time this week (hopefully) with them on as a sort of trial run.

It's the Dolomiti 36L ones i've got. If the offers still on and you're interested, i'll show you how to get them for £360 exc the rack. It was by far the cheapest i found them for at the time, havent looked recently though.

I keep mulling it over about changing my panniers for something a bit tougher as mine are mainly plastic with an aluminium skin. Loads of volume and waterproof but any kind of spill off-road I don't think they'd last.

I was just in J&S with my brother whilst he was looking at more helmets when I spotted them and remembered you'd bought some. They look pretty good.

is there much chance of taking it off road with panniers on?

Not sure i'd like to do that to mine either tbh, they do seem pretty solid but then 'seeming' solid and having the weight of the bike piled ontop of them in a thud is a different story isnt it :D

Yes, it would go off road with but mainly farm track type stuff whilst is still easy to drop the bike on.

Skip to the middle of this video and you'll see what i mean about the headlights.

It seems to be that as the headlight turns with the bars, when you drop it in the beam pattern is so close to the bike that you've no idea where you're going. Shame really as they look plenty bright enough.. its jus the light is in the wrong place.

What footrests are they? The gilles ones?

They are genuine Yamaha Adventure foot rests...but be aware on the gear lever side you have to grind the head off the "pin" NOT like the other side with "split pin" .... VERY strange Yamaha did it that way!!!!?

Yeah i'd seen that before. Quite odd isnt it?

Just borrowed an MT09-Quickshift whilst the R3 in for service.  Man alive it seemed even quicker than the earlier version I borrowed.

Quickshift takes some adapting too.  Certainly felt like a sub 3 second 0-60 and standing quarter and not much over 10s.

Impressive but could not trust myself with one, such good value compared to the R1/R6 IMO.

NO bits n bobs left for sale for the 900 Tracer.....starting adding to the 700 Tracer !
