There is a thread on here about it, 99 Ron petrol at Costco.

Can you post a link to it, tried searching but nothing came up

Unleaded petrol that has a higher octane number than that required by the

engine can be used without limitations.

The use of petrol with an octane rating higher than 95 RON in does not result

in either a noticeable increase in power nor lower fuel consumption in vehicles

for which unleaded petrol 95/min 92 or 93 RON is specified.

On vehicles using prescribed unleaded petrol of min. 95 RON, the use of petrol

with a higher octane number than 95 RON can increase the power and reduce

fuel consumption.

Just a reminder of this note in the owners manual. My filler flap does state 95 RON minimum. So , remembering this, when the other day I was passing Tesco I filled up with the 99 RON stuff. No noticeable improvements in mpg or power on subsequent trips.

When in France earlier this year I tried 98RON, 95RON AND E10 - with no noticeable difference in performance, economy or smoothness.

That is unusual, the E10 here in Australia is the rubbish 91 Octane with 10% Bioethanol which gives it a 94 Octane rating and noted for providing poor consumption results not offset by the slightly lower price. The European version would have a fraction of the sulphur in the Australian version but apart from the long-term detrimental effects of using high sulpher fuels engines and emissions equipment the Euro E10 would have the same lower calorific content per litre.

The pumps in France claimed the E10 was 95RON?

Then legally it must be.

Even our 91 octane fuel has anti knock agents added to achieve that rating.

If fuels were sold by weight instead of volume then the calorific values would be more equal.

A friend owned a Gulf petrol station, he is a little too far for me to use him on a routine basis.  His fuel is 5p Per L more than the Asda a mile down the road, yet all the taxi drivers use his 95 because of the noticeably better fuel consumption over Asda.

E10 might well be 95 ron minimum, that does not mean it is 'simply cleaver' to put it in your Skoda / VW engine.

Re the Gulf filling station and the Asda one it might be a smart idea if someone asked which Depot delivers to the Gulf Station compared to were the Asda 95 ron comes from and what the additive is that Gulf put in at the Depot that Asda 95 ron unleaded does not get.

EDIT<

I take it the Taxis are mainly diesels, it would be good to know how many more miles they get out of a tank full of Gulf Diesel over

Asda diesel for the £2.50 or more they pay per tankful, or just the extra driving and running time sitting with engines running while parked up.

Greenergy, partly owned by Tesco, produces Tesco Momentum 99, shares co-owned importation and storage facilities with Royal Dutch Shell, Produces and Delivers for ESSO, and others,

maybe even Costco Super Unleaded 99 ron minimum super unleaded.

Given simple choice of E10 or run out of fuel? Which is where I was the only time I used it...

You make your choices and pays the cost maybe.

Parking and getting a taxi to buy a can an 95 ron unleaded not E10 might have been the better choice....

?

Did the filling station only sell E10 unleaded?

Tesco 99 fuel only for the points

Get a taxi when on holiday in rural France with a car full of family and possessions - I don't think so B)

Yes only E10, they had run out of 95 and 98 and it was Sunday so (as typical in rural France) it was the only petrol station open within many miles - more than I had left in the tank.

It's several months later and still no effect, car behaves exactly the same as before, so I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

OK

I remembered on you posting on engine light warnings and needing to reset every so often, so if that was before using the E10 then not related.

?

Is that issue now resolved?

I really don't get the point you are trying to make based on the link you posted for SWBoy.

The only point made about petrol is that it should be low sulphur and the right octane for the engine, nothing about whether E10 is suitable or not. All Euro E10 fuels will comply with the Euro laws on sulphur content. In any case inside the filler cap of my 1.4tsi it just says not to use fuel with greater than 10% bioethanol.

Mark you that link is VERY RELEVANT to Australian motorists because as I said before the E10 here is based on the very high sulphur 91 Octane base fuel.

No nothing in there about suitable or not, you need to go read the stuff about E10 and VW engines for that.

If all is OK, then whats the worst that can happen.

As it is a filling station that runs out of other fuels might have had that E10 in their tanks for long enough,

i would be asking how long.

Re your Filler Flap in Australia, that is not on ones in Europe, unless by chance there is, not seen any with it though.

That started over a year before I had to use E10 when on holiday in France so it's unrelated.

Yes sorted after I persuaded the dealer to update the engine ECU from 7861 firmware to 9170 - but only after I used erWin to show them it was an available update for the 1.4TSI.

Tesco 95 unleaded, with the occasional tank or two of 99 RON, never noticed any measurable difference between the two to justify the price difference.

I go to great extents to avoid using anything else than Shell V-power on my car, and if for some reason I am really stuck without a Shell gas station in the neighbourhood, never anything less than 98 goes in my car.

...when I have loaner cars, always only the cheapest had I can find goes in them :)

I saw a fifth gear episode where they did a comparison test and came to the same conclusion.

The irony with diesel certainly here in Northern Ireland red diesel is better and safer as its not tampered with even from major suppliers. Absolutely not legal and i would never use it, not even in a runabout.

Red diesel is not tampered with by who do you mean.  Who would tamper?

It is diesel / Derv with a marker in in Northern Ireland as it also has in the UK mainland all being under UK & EU law.

(It is tampered with in Northern Ireland and elsewhere by those that use Fullers Earth to remove the dye.

But that is the illegal tampering.)

Pump Diesel without a marker is diesel and as is, unless it is Premium Diesel, and has a different Detergent or additive package.

.......................

The 2 different Fifth Gear Episodes where 98, 97 & 95 octane fuels are tested are on Youtube, as is the episode with Jason Plato with Redex used

and new Plugs, Air & Oil filters and oil used on an older engine.

Shell V-Power 98 ron as used in the Fifth Gear Tests is now Shell V-Power Nitro + in the UK and 99 ron minimum,

as is Tesco Momentum 99 & likely Costco Super Unleaded, but that will show on the pump if it is.

This is what I do and my experience is exactly the same. Good for the points when it's a weekly fill up ;)

Even if the Tesco (Greenergy) Super Unleaded 99 ron Petrol does not show as reducing Emissions or give better fuel consumption over their Unleaded & a competitors Super Unleaded 99 ron in what might be your vehicle type under testing at least Tesco publish test results and let you see that if you want to look.

Not many if others do the same.

As to any improvement over others 95 ron or 97/99 ron that will be another story.

Fair point, the taxis are mostly diesel apart from a few Prius.  Hadn’t twigged that one.
