USB charger

Featured Replies

Hi skoda fans, maybe anyone fitted USB chargers in those slots and could show me what parts do I need and how to do it?

What you could do is hard wire one of these (or something like it) to the fuse box, then route usb extension cables to the switch location. The box can be hidden behind the dash somewhere.

These are screwable so could be attached to the switch cover plates.

I have one of the boxes stashed behind the drivers side cubby and the cord provides power to my front dash cam and a phone cable by the windscreen

Not sure how to achieve it though.

Err. That is what I was describing (maybe badly) in my first post.

The box is hardwired to the fuse box and hidden in the dash. That is them used to provide the conversion from 12v to 5v for the usb ports. Attach the usb cables to the box and route them through the dash to the correct location. Then cut a hole in one of the blanks and screw the usb port so it is accessible through the hole.

To hardwire the cigarette box you need, one of these to tap into an existing fuse

take apart the cigarette part to work out which wire is positive and solder that wire to the add a circuit wire. The other wire you would find a suitable nut on the metal bodywork and ground the wire there.

This is a bit like what was done in the following post but with a bit more usb wire routing. In this case you are just using the 12v box to be the usb charger.

I order parts like all those above, original plan was same just to put in ashtray but yesterday I noticed that there isn't any space to make cable thru as it's Bluetooth box,so stuck with ideas..And to use that belkin in cigarette socket Is annoying as cigarette socket is pernament live,so don't want to all the time whichin on then off and hiding all cables

There is space to route a cable from the sills under the seat runner. Not sure about routing from under seat to centre console though, but that could be a route.

The USB socket in front of the gear lever is capable of charging my phone - if its not using too much power. Not sure how much it can deliver though.

What is the insurance situation on modifying electrics with piggyback fuse adapters?

Not much

....

And this is with a USB c cable cable on a quickcharge phone, so it can pull up to 3a.IMG_20170527_200043.jpg

maybe we should look into increasing more power output from the usb socket?

Alternatively you could just have one of these and place the second set of ports inside the arm rest. You won't really notice the black cable going into the arm rest if you route it carefully

+1 for that.

Bought it for a bank holiday camping weekend for 4 adults; 6.5 hour drive and the backseat passengers were grateful for the USB ports.  Just clipped it onto the back of the driver seat, seems easier than having to faff about with rewiring things.

I understand it worked well, I was driving but everyone else was happy.

I have this one, everything would be perfect if that 12v won't be pernament live as now all the time plug in and plug out its annoying

It is not very easy to fit anything to the empty buttons because the entire row is one mold with one connector.

Not entirely impossible, I'm fitting some on/off switches myself but it is rather time consuming job.

Any more details of adding buttons. I want to do this to Power my own things so don’t mind what the button picture is actually for

I'll second this as described above. I have this in my new FL Octavia SE L DSG Estate and had it in my previous one. Very easy to complete, the hardest part is getting the glove box back in place and the damper rod connected again. I took the fuse out of the position shown in the picture. (This is in the FL model) iirc this fuse position is the rear  wiper fuse) then position the 12v socket extension to the drivers side cubby. (My 12v extension has 3 12v sockets and 2 usb sockets) it is cable ties in place after I removed the cubby and drilled a couple of small holes to pass the cable ties through and it is used for the dash cam and a usb charging lead for my work mobile.

Now I use android auto, I have a right angle USB cable tucked away, routed to my phone holder on the air vent on the right of the driver.

Mind you I like it most of all because it is all hidden and tucked away out of sight. My new car has 2 USB ports in the back of the centre cubby armrest for the rear seat passengers, so I'm future proof

you can easily mod the cigarette plug to switch with the ignition, far easier than cutting a hole in a blank.
