Views on using this Oil.

The sticker on the chaises says shell. On shell U.K. Website it comes up with a 0w30 ect2/3 shell helix ultra for variable service. It is vww 504.oo approved. It looks like that 5w40 has been the most often used oil. I was thinking of using the 0w 30 from the shell?. Would there be any advanatages/ disadvantages in case of changing from 5w40 to 0w30. Both are approved vw 504

As a 2011 Octavia 2 TSI owner oils are confusing but I’m learning! (I come from using Castrol R on my Vincent m/c and Valvoline on my Cooper S - era.)

Oil 1: Quantum Platinum is API SM/CF (previous API)

Oil 2: Shell Helix Ultra is API SN/CF (latest API)

 

The Octi manual states I can only use half litre of API SM/SN oil (top-up?) or engine damage will/may? occur?  (As rayx cites below) Yet all VW recommended oil seems API SN (with some ‘secret’ stuff added, perhaps?)

 

In checking over the Octi my son (a Toyota mechanic) sumped it with 4.7 litres of API SM/CF Fully Synthetic used for all Toyota/Lexus vehicles. I was about to get some Penrite Enviro+ 5W30 (with a VW stamp on - API SN) and replace it.

 

The question is should I still do this? (It’s the wife’s Octi and she only travels short distances. I used to change mineral oils at 5000km.)

Disregard all the API specifications.  Look for the VW specs.  For a petrol engine, you can use either  VW502.00 or VW504.00 .  As  Australia doesn't use variable/long life servicing, both are fine.

 

If the car doesn't burn oil then the Penrite Enviro+ 5w30 (which is 504.00 spec) is ideal.  

 

If it's an oil burner then Penrite HPR5 5w40 (502.00 spec) would be a better choice.

 

There are plenty of other alternatives but Penrite is readily available.

 

FWIW, the 504.00 is less prone to sludging and wear but if you change the oil at the required intervals and pay head to the "severe service" parameters in the service book, it should be an issue.  I've run both specs in my 1.8tsi including 0w40 502.00.

Thanks Brad1.8T, looks like I'll have to dump the 'new' API SM oil.

Interesting that the Octi (Octy?) is 2011 build when only API SM oils were available. (SN oil began in 2011) Also interesting that Penrite advocate flushing while VAG  say this voids warranty.

 

I'm getting less happy with Skoda. It cost me $1700 to extend my Fabia 3 warranty to 5 years + 3 services and they've just increased warranty to 5 years! Oh well, that's Life.

As I said, disregard API classifications.  VW have their own classifications / specifications.

 

I'd leave the oil in for 5000km.  

 

"Good" oil, changed at the proper intervals with the engine hot, doesn't require a flushing additive as it should have sufficient detergents and should hold particles in suspension and deter sludging.  If  servicing has been neglected, sometimes you have to use a flushing additive.  

 

If you do lots of short trips or suburban stop/start then you might wish to change the oil more often than every 15k km / 12 months.

 

There's always a better offer around the corner.  :-)
