leaking rocker cover!

Featured Replies

Hello all,

My first post here, I've recently signed up to post this thread, because i cant find one on here which as helped me

but i've been reading this forum for a few years now and its help me with lots of other problems which i managed to fix, so thanks all!

Anyway,  I've had a rocker cover leak at the top right of my engine for a while now, be decided to try and sort it out, so ive replaced the gasket, and its still leaking,

I've uploaded a picture of the engine i have, anyway, theres only 2 nuts on this cover which is crap really, and they screw down onto like rubber gromets,

I've looked in the haynes manual and it states 8nm to tighten to, i've tightened with a small wrachet, hand tight, snug and a bit more, i have not got a torque wrench that goes that low,

but i think there tight enough...

it also does not say to use any gasket glue in the manual, any ideas, anyone had this problem ?

its a really slow drip, seep, from the right corner only.

thanks again!

Welcome to the site :)

Mine was leaking in the same place but a new gasket cured it. Was it all nice and clean before you put it back together? Maybe nip the nuts up a little more?

Yeah I cleaned it pretty well.. it was smooth and shiny on the bottom half.. didn't touch the top much because I couldn't disconnect the hoses ? Need a special pliers? I cannot tighten any more.. I reckon would warp the cover or strip the threads.. maybe I'll have to try a new cover.. just in case it has warped in that one corner.. it does look straight by eye though.. bit of a bad design on my old car there where more bolts and they was around the sides.. so seemed to compress the gasket better.. cheers for the reply.. *scratches head* :)

Spent ages cleaning the front of engine after replacing the old gasket is was all hard brittle and cracked.. I was sure this would sort it ..

Possible try to take it off completely and reclean both parts.. any ideas what pliers are needed for undoing the hose clips ? Thanks

The original clips are the crimped type and must be destroyed to remove them. Just obtain some ordinary hose clips to refit.

Did you get a decent gasket? The one I bought was the Febi brand.

Worth getting the hoses off to clean them out, also check that the nipples they connect to aren't blocked, especially the ones for the thin hose.

Very true. Any blockage could force oil out.
