Oil light when starting engine

Featured Replies

Hi, everyone in new to all this, hopefully someone could help.

I bought a 1.8tsi Lauren octavia 60 plate 42k on the clock, two months ago, Loved it no problems.

Then last week my oil light came on, the orange dot matrix one in the centre of the display. Ok, so topped it up with oil back upto the max on the dip stick, it took over one and a half litre to top it up.

Ever since then everytime I turn the key when starting the engine the same orange light flashes four times and stops. I have checked the oil level still at max, no oil spots on my drive.

However when my foot slipped on the clutch this morning when driving the orange light flashed on again, the revs went over 30 if that helps.

It is due back at the skoda dealer Friday for a diagnosis text as it's still under warranty. Any ideas when I'm facing?

Could be something like the oil pressure switch.

When they do the diagnosis test will they pick that up?

Welcome.

So what service history and warranty history is with the car.

When was the oil and filter supposedly changed and would it not be an idea to get it done now, especially if it come with Full Main Dealer Service History and that was Variable / Flexible servicing.

Had you checked the oil level when you got the car or before the warning light, and where was thew oil with a Stone Cold on the flat dip,

or an at 'Operating Temperature' oil level check as in the Owners Manual?

Hi, thank-you. I have full service history and three months warranty through the skoda dealership. I checked the oil with the dip when I got the car and it was between max and middle, last service was a variable service. Serviced at 36k Jan 16 service book says next service at 56k or January 2018.

Although the service book says these not changed:

Fuel filter

Spark plugs

Air filter elelment

Toothed belt

Toothed belt tensioning pulley replaced.

It also says no 'changed oil and oil filter in the automatic gearbox DSG

Hopefully this will make more sense to you.

Best get it in for a check to see if the Warranty will need to cover any sensor or the reason for the warning.

The Warranty will require that Service Schedule / Guidelines are followed so the DSG 40,000 mile Oil & Filter change is overdue.

So that is £175 or so.

Not full servicing carried out if a Major / Variable Service has meant no Pollen Filter or Air Filter has been changed,

unless done previously.

PS

In your post you said your foot slipped on the clutch,

is it a DSG you have or a manual car?

I think by what your saying let skoda find out what the problem is, get that sorted and then put it in for a full service. Just so I can find out if there are any other hidden problems.

You want the diagnosis done to see if that will be a Warranty Claim.

Then you are going to have to pay for a DSG Service anyway.

?

What does the Invoice show as the oil used at the last service.

5W 40 FS VW502 00,  or 5w 30 FS Long Life lll VW 504 00. ?

Worst case scenario - you could be looking at new engine. Mine used to do the same on start up and that's what I ended up needing.

True.  But I would be surprised at 42k on the clock

And serviced every 10 to 15 k

Why would you be surprised on a 1.8TSI with only 42,000 miles?

Look at the pinned thread at the top of the page.

1.8 & 2.0 TSI engine Failures.

Do not delay raising concerns with the Warranty Provider.

If only minor issues then good, sorted, but raised in the 3 months then they can not dismiss it later, especially since you bought at a Skoda Dealership.

Not unkown issues, and they provided the Warranty, even if only 3 months.

As far as I remember red oil indication means definitely low oil level which requires topping up and Amber is low pressure oil level which could be various causes like problematic oil pump, clogged oil filter, problematic pressure sensor, even again low oil level!...

A fault scan will indicate you the way..

Red Oil Can Low Oil Pressure.

Orange Oil can low oil level.

Open the bonnet for more than 30 seconds and the light goes out for 100 km.

Or can.

I'm used to driving cars with 100k on the clock. This is my first low mileage car. Well low mileage for me.

Ok the facts I do know is the oil light comes on when dip stick full. And I have had to put oil in. How should I handle the dealership when it goes in Friday?

I'm just getting orange oil light on the dot matrix screen. No red oil light on the speedo side.

You tell the Service Desk person or manager who has no technical knowledge which is why they get that job the story,

and ask if the Master Tech is available so you can tell him /her the issues.

Then you see what the story is, and whatever they tell you have them put that in writting with their name, job description and qualification.

Unless they are ready to sort it out at no cost to you and confirm that all is well.

Then get them to sign that off as well.

Trust nobody when there is only weeks to go on the warranty.

Over 1.5l to fill? Seems like a lot to me. You certain it's not been overfilled? These only take 4.6l on a oil change?

^^^

True, but with a 1.4 TSI /TFSI Twincharger with 3.6 Litre Capacity the Low Oil Warning light or Message might not show before the oil is 1.5 litres to 2 litres low.

& the Low Oil Pressure light shows on some before the Low Oil Warning.

Vorsprung Durch Technik.  Take nothing for granted with VW Engines.

Read how to check Oil Levels, and Skoda might say 'Warm',  VW says Operating Temperature.  Lots gets lost 'In translation,  German, CZ, Spanish, English.

@Longship.  When I use the dipstick on the cold engine it comes to the max kink on the dipstick.

Awayoffski I'm printing off the warranty as I text. I will read it thoroughly.

To top it all my mrs talking to me about wedding dresses!

Doesn't she realise if we don't have a car we aren't going on any honeymoon

Thank-you to everyone I'm learning so much.

Unfortunately, despite it being a nice engine to drive, there are some vulnerabilities with the EA888 TSI 1.8 and 2.0 engines as you're probably aware by now. Some pretty serious.  They don't affect everyone but with the "right" or maybe more correctly put, incorrect conditions the problems do seems to crop up rather prematurely.

I don't want to jump the start gun or put fear into you where it is not proven or not appropriate. BUT, I would say with adding 1.5 litres of oil in the first 2 months of ownership is an ALARM BELL.

You need to proceed with caution and eyes open. If you have a strong warranty you need to have your issues logged within the warranty period.  If the dealer has an exchange or repair policy, you need to be aware of that. I would drive 1000 miles in the remainder of my warranty or statutory rights if I had to to prevent me being left to pick up the pieces of a spent engine.

The Piston, conrod, ring replacement is not a cheap one on this engine. Often, new engines were used rather than the rebuild. Either way it is serious £££. I hope it was just low on oil at your purchase but it is not the way most posts on this forum pan out, especially on a recently purchased motor...

Edit: If you are the inquisitive type. Pull the plugs and inspect.  Confirm oil level, drive for 600 or 1000 miles. Confirm consumption. Of course, you have to resolve the current oil low/ low oil pressure notification first.

Morning all. Now here's a point of interest,  I turned on my engine fully expecting the orange oil light to flash four times. As had come standard with my car. No flashing this morning? Nothing, as if nothing had ever happened.  Oil level still at max. Mmmm

Car booked in for diagnostis Friday which I am keeping appointment.  Went over warranty and I'm covered for all electrical and mechanical faults up to £1000. If anyone is interested I will post the results when the car goes in Friday.

Yes, let us know how you get on.

In the Oct II FL  manual I have, orange oil light indication is either low oil level or a fault with the sensor if it flashes:

***

Warning light [orange oil can picture] flashes

A fault on the engine oil level sensor is indicated additionally by an audible signal and
the warning light coming on several times after the ignition has been switched on.
In this case have the engine inspected without delay by a specialist garage.
The following text will be displayed in the information display*:
Oil sensor. Workshop!

****

It is worth them checking as the detail in owners manual doesn't always cover every possibility or explanation detail.

At the very very least, in their checks on Friday, I would get the oil replenishment noted as reported requiring 1.5L by the customer in first 2 months / xx miles. Irrespective of what they find with the oil sensor.

£1,000 would not go far enough to resolve the issues, if it is the piston / ring design problem.

You may want to consider getting the tensioner done on the car preventatively if it is a keeper and hasn't been done already (and if it does not show any oil drinking problems after you monitor it for a set period).  There is a lot of info in the sticky 1.8 / 2.0 TSI engine failure thread to explain why you may want to consider that.

I found the handbook unhelpful as the flashing light/audible warning on start up suggested oil level sensor issue but I actually had oil level issues. Never had a red oil light but was topping up oil every few hundred miles. An oil consumption test demonstrated the need for new engine.
