Creaking Suspension

Featured Replies

Hi all ! Hope you don't mind me invading your forum !!

Do you have creaking / groaning suspension on your Octavia ? Specifically when braking and traversing bumps ?

Have a look at my thread in the Superb Forum :

I have an Octavia loan and while not currently as bad as my Superb its making the same noise !

Yep, my VRS suspension seems to creak when hitting the first bump after beeing left standing for time beforehand. By the third or fourth bump it completely disappears. Mine has done it since new.

I've just had my drop links done under warranty because of a very similar creak.  They were reportedly 'tight'.  It's cured my creak.

Curious as I'd previously associated drop links as knocking rather than creaking.

Interesting ! How many miles had you done when you noticed ? Be interesting to see if it comes back. Did it only happen under braking ?

It started to notice particularly at around 1,600 miles.  I raised it with another warranty item, and re-raised it at the first service (5,000 miles), where Skoda reported they were 'unable to replicate the problem'.  Come it's second service last month (12,000 miles), I mentioned that it was still there, so when I dropped it off for the service, a technician came out with me to hear it and was able to.

Didn't happen under braking but was noticeable on speed bumps and low speed manoeuvres like reversing onto my drive (dropped kerb, but a mild camber on the road).  Yes, it'll be interested to see if it comes back, but for now I'm enjoying the silence!

So this could be the same as mine then ..?

Have a look at my thread in the superb forum. I posted a link to a video I did.

My car is doing the same. It creaks while going over first few bumps. It disappears after. Dealer was not able to replicate the problem.

Maybe a different prob Sak. Mine doesn't disappear.

My 45,000 mile Octvia 2.0 TDi front suspension creaks over every speed bump and largish imperfection in the road. On a road of speed bumps, travelling slowly along it sounds like newly weds on an knackered old bed.

mine does the same, it comes from the front, i have mentioned it to the dealers after a month of ownership and was told it is quite normal.

No it's not ! Have you owned your car from new ? Mine was whisper quiet for a year. My dealer have acknowledged it's not right. Suggest you try a different dealer.

My 4 year old Octavia with just over 44000 miles has just started to make this creaking noise especially over car park speed bumps and some local rough roads. Any ideas what the solution maybe and the cost?

Probably front wishbone bushes need greasing. Have a search, its a very common issue - cured mine.

Yes it does appear a very common problem having had a search around. The car will be due a service in a few thousand miles. I get them looked at then.

It might be worth giving them the TPI number of 2042935/3 before hand. My dealer had to order the 'special' grease in so I had to take the car back. Might save you a 2nd trip....

Is it a warranty job? Mines done it since new.

Yup, my non-Vrs estate facelift does, especially when parking up on hills. I’ve put that down to bushes creaking which isn’t a major issue for me.
I do have a bit of a “knockety” sound intermittently though, sounds like an under-tray/panel that is loose but more prevalent at lowish speeds, over consistently uneven road (as is commonplace here in Wales). I’ll be flagging that up with the dealer shortly as my concern is that it could be a duffed spring or drop link (plus I need to check that it’s not something in the boot...) even though the car has only done 10k miles (but will also give me an opportunity to flag up creaky suspension). Different issue for a different thread, I guess!

My old mkII Octavia (144,000 miles) has only recently started squeaking seemingly from the front suspension.  I will see if a bit of lubrication around the joints will help, once the weather gets warmer for crawling around under the car that is.

Greasing rubber to matel bonded suspension bushes is a complete bodge and I don't care that Skoda may sell a special grease or have a TPI saying to do so.

Rubber to metal bonded bushes were introduced to create maintenance free suspension free from grease nipples.

They slather grease over the bushes because they are allowing metal to metal contact under certain conditions which they should never ever do, the bushes are either worn, incorrectly manufactured or more likely the suspension and bush design is not fit for the purpose.

I would use a suitable lubricant to diagnose where the creaking is coming from and then inspect carefully to see where there is metal to metal contact.

The bushes will never make any noise in their designed range of movement and articulation, it is why the company who was the major worldwide OE manufacturer for decades and the patent holder was called Silentbloc.
