How to power a head unit on the bench for testing?

Featured Replies

@Rustynuts Bit off topic from the original thread but how do you power that head unit while it's on the bench rather than running off the car? I have an old Android Head Unit I need to power it up so I can reset it to sell on but am not sure how I go about this. (I can't use my car's power as I have since changed vehicles)

I use a 12v laptop power supply, connect to the 12v +ve and ground of the head unit.

You haven't got a picture at all by any chance have you? :)

I don't know which terminals the aftermarket unit will use, or what connections it'll have. There'll be a wiring diagram on it somewhere which will tell you the terminals to connect to, after that you just need any 12v dc power supply for a few quid off ebay. Or a car battery and a lead with a couple of croc clips to connect to it.

It just uses a standard quad-lock connector. Will have a look at it over the weekend. I have an old laptop power supply laying around somewhere so will just splice the connector off of there and use that.

Quadlock connectors are standard, the pinouts on them may not be the same though. If it fitted in a Skoda (or a VAG) then it should be pin 12 Ground and pin 15 12v +ve. If you need to use a loom adapter to make it fit then the pins could well be different. The laptop adapter must be 12v DC output obviously.

Yes it was fitted to my old MKII Fabia Monte so I would assume the pins will be as described. But will double check the wiring diagram on it to make sure. If I have any more questions I'll get back to you. Thanks for the help :)
