Felicia 1.6 glxi temperature gauge readings

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've been reading up on the forums about different issues people have had with thermostat housing breaking where the stat pin pushes through the plastic in the housing. Now I am unsure if my car has this fault without taking it apart. Here are some symptoms.

On my last car (polo 6n2) the coolant temp needle would sit halfway once warm, and never go above this point. On the felly once warm it also sits halfway when driving (at high speed it is just below middle)

Have noticed though that if traffic is slow at a snailpace the gauge will creep to about 3/4 and the fan kicks in. For example a few days ago it was about 30 degrees Celsius outside and I was stuck on an uphill gradient on a narrow b road, a stupid caravan was refusing to drive though a gap it could clearly fit through :wondering:, so was sat for about ten minutes before they moved, in which time the temp rose to 3/4 when the fan kicks in, which seems to be preventing the coolant from getting any hotter. In this situation it cooled slightly, then within a few minutes rose again, triggering the fan again. Once we got moving again the gauge reads back at halfway. It seems that if the car is left idling, or driving in 3mph traffic for ten mins, the temp will rise to 3/4 gradually but not above this because the fan always kicks in. Could this indicate that the thermostat housing has failed, or is this a normal characteristic of the car?

thanks!

Here is a picture to illustrate my description. Where the temp needle is on this picture, this is when the fan kicks in. I took this today after a drive, the temperature rose at the end of my journey when I hit some rush hour traffic, also its boiling today, about 28 degrees Celsius B). Im asking because I'm not sure if it should get this hot or if this is normal :blush I've recently had a coolant flush and change, and the levels are spot on, no leaks.

Hi, I don't know if its normal but I have the same when its hot outside and during rush hour ( stop and go driving ) but anyway I never had some problems

Thanks nimbus, I'm just curious because I've not noticed it on other cars I've driven (3 cars), cheers.

Your description matches the normal operation for Felicia on a hot day. The radiator fan kicks in at about 100° C. I find annoying that the fan stops too early (95° C) with a new fan thermo-contact (FACET 7.5017 rated 87-82° C liie the book says). By the way, the rating of the thermo-contact is referring to the coolant temperature in the area where it is mounted (bottom of the radiator in Felicia's case) not the gauge temperature. I will change my thermo-contact with one with a lower rating (82--77° C) so that the fan will kick in at 95° C and will stop at 90° C.

Thanks Ricardo,

Its interesting to hear the technical details. I also noticed the fan doesn't cool back to 90.

Thanks again, I guess I was worried the engine was about to cook :D

Do you know the part number for the lower rating one?

Could do with my fan working like that in my 1.8t Felicia.

I have no data about your engine. Download this catalogue and choose the part you need. In my opinion it's best to think about a lower temperature thermostat too.

I'm using an earlier 1.8t management which means i still use the Skoda coolant sensor (6u0919501b) and original fan switch. Therefore this still applies to my setup, like you i would prefer my fan to kick in at 95° and stay on until 90°.

CALORSTAT TS1568 is equivalent.

One other option is to use FACET 7.5007 (87-77° C) used on many cars that will bring the temperature back to 90° C. It's a trade off. FACET 7.5007 will make the fan run longer but less often, while FACET 7.5030 will make the fan run more often but for shorter period. By observing modern cars I heard their fan running for a very long time.
