I'm fairly new to driving diesels, other than the odd works van, and have come

from performance petrols (rev matching on the downshifts etc) so I'm still getting to grips with shifting and how you can run a diesel at low speeds in higher gears.

 

I've read that some people like to be in 6th asap, even as low down as 40mph! To me this sounds as if the car would be labouring. At what rpm are these engines comfortable running at when in a high gear at low speeds?

 

I found driving the 120 miles home after I picked mine up, mainly at 50-60mph, in 5th was more economical than 6th (averaged 62mpg).

 

Shifting at around 1800-2500rpm and sitting at around 1900/2000 rpm when cruising seems to return the best figures for me. Does this sound about rite?

 

As with anything I'm sure my driving style will adapt over time as I get used to the change but any tips to help me on the way would be much appreciated.

sounds about right 70 in 6th should sit about 2k

 

at 60 I'm still in 5th

Mines got a Stage one remap so the torque curve is different, I tend to be in 4th at 30mph 5th at 40 and 6th around 55-60 for driving with economy in mind,

I'm pretty much the same in my REVO stage 1 mapped car

Sounds about right... It's mind blowing to know people drive in 6th on 40mph.... but I suppose that's why there's a market for flywheels :D

 

I try not to keep it in gear under 1500 rpm except for when going downhill or slowly decelerating or during in town driving in 1st and 2nd. Sticking it into the proper gear depending on the speed when I need to accelerate again.

Usually I try to keep from 1500 to 2500 rpm (except fast accelerating and driving in unsteady traffic - for example, town). For longer cruising I try to drive at ~2k rpm.

My opinion is that ~70 mph is the right speed to start using the 6th gear. That's for 2.0 TDI. Topic creator hasn't said what engine he's got but from the description it seems to be the same.

 

Many people think that driving at low rpm (even a bit more than idle :D) is the right way to do because "diesels are meant to be driven that way". That dumb gear switch adviser on display makes everything even worse. The result is plenty of problems...

I have a 2.0 TDI vRS CR 170.

 

I never go of that shift change advisor and turn them off where possible!

Oh, just saw the title - that car couldn't have other engine ;)

 

By the way, yesterday I was a passenger in my colleagues car. 1.6 TDI. Well, at 70 kph he managed to get into 6th. If we don't talk about possible future problems, even the travelling wasn't fun - the car sounded weird and vibrated more than I wanted. The the speed dropped a bit and he was driving a bit more than idle rpm...
