Favorit -> Felicia engine transplant: is it practical also to transplant the Favorit control unit?

Featured Replies

Now that my Favorit has to be retired, it would be good if I could save the engine for future use in my Felicias (the Favorit engine is in much better shape, they're all 1289 petrol injection).

Ideally, I’d like to utilise the Favorit control unit as well (simpler and reliable - I know it plays nicely with the old engine).

However, I fear that it might be very difficult to fix up the old controller with the 2000 Felicia wiring - I’m thinking particularly about immobiliser etc. circuits - especially as I lack the “proper” Skoda circuit diagrams.

Can anyone advise me?

What documents do you have now and what exactly do you mean by “proper” Skoda circuit diagrams?

RicardoM, thanks, I have the dreaded Haynes-manual circuit diagrams for both the Favorits and the Felicias, but these are very basic point-to-point schematics which do not present the full picture - Bosch electronic control units seem to be a no-go area for them, with accompanying text like ‘refer to your Skoda dealer’.

My reference to “proper" circuit diagrams was prompted by recollection of posts way back in this forum indicating that diagrams showing full wiring loom details do exist, but (perversely, IMHO) Skoda/VAG do not make these available to customers in general or even to enthusiasts like ourselves.

Access to such “proper” information would make informed decisions on problems such as that which I have posed so much easier.

This should be a good start.

Thanks again, RicardoM - certainly a good start, but in fact a (rather clearer) version of the diagrams I already have in my Haynes manuals.  The equivalent one for the Felicia is as we know somewhat different, and the snag with this form of presentation - showing just "black box" connections - is that I might find myself a load of trouble if I attempted to switch control units without a clear understanding of the full picture.

However, since starting this thread, the question has unfortunately, for me, become somewhat academic - the reason being the many frustrating hours I've spent in the meantime trying to get sense out of the insurance industry.

It seems that lots of non-technical-types on the underwriting side over here have started to take quite severe ( & IMHO absurd) views on "modifications" (f'rinstance treating even standard Skoda wheeltrims as a "modification", and - can you believe it? - in one case even flatly prohibiting a paint job!), so I'd better forget about switching controllers.

Nonetheless, I'd be interested to know if anyone has done this successfully, and whether any big problems were encountered.

I have a pre-cat Favorit engine in my felicia. Its fairly simple to swap all the felicia components and sensors to the favorit engine. I did it all myself, because i wanted the freedom with the exhaust to tune it to suit my performance cam. My ECU is coping well because im using the original multipoint injection and manifold with the original sensors. The two tricky bits are;

The crank sensor notch on the flywheel must be in the correct position 90 degrees in advance of Top dead centre. I got this wrong once because my favorit was the carb version, (Engine out again to fix!!.).

Secondly the carb Favorit doesnt have a knock sensor on the back of the engine: i havent had any major problems with mine since i drilled the strengthening rib that runs along the engine partway up the block, and bolted my sensor through it. Remember that this has to be done while the engine is out.

Ill help more if i can.
