What's wrong with my Octavia?

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 1.8 turbo, bit of work done remap and few other things. It's suffered a loss of power today though. Driving along and it just started to struggle for power. It is running much slower than usual, takes forever to rev, judders really badly unless you rev it high. The boost is ok but revs are low and power is gone. Any suggestions whats wrong with it? All help appreciated.

coil pack.

:iagree: coil pack

Thanks guys, so how much is a coilpack then, is it a hard job to fix? Had a 40,000 mile service less than a month ago too.

Coil packs are about £25 to fix. Simply remove the engine cover, disconnect the faulty item, pull it out, push new one on, replace wiring connector and engine cover.

Tricky part is working out which one has failed without diagnostic software.

Incidentally, can you hear a misfire if you put your ear to the exhaust pipe?

Haven't lisened for a misfire yet, I originally thought fuel pump or maf sensor, shows how much I know. If I pick up a new coil pack, could I just try it in every socket untill I get the right one, e.g. when the car is running on full power again?

Coil packs are here:

To get to number 4 you need to remove the 10mm nut and black box thingy (easy)

They look like this:

Type 'H' coil packs are the faulty ones, J was an interim fix and L is th ecurrent spec.

The easy way to identify them is by the colour of the metal tube.

If you have any 'H' type I'd change them. I had a mixture of all 3 types so changed them all for the sake of it ;)

Thanks Goochie, top man, will check them and change to type L.:)

Take it to the dealers and ask them to check which letters you have, as there is a service sheet that tells the dealers to change the old ones when the car is serviced, even if they are not faulty.

They should change all four free of charge if you have the older ones.

They did mine and many others.

Really, the service was very recent, does anyone else know of this? Free parts from dealers is rarer than a golden unicorn round my way.

I knew free parts would appeal to a Scot...........LOL but honestly it is a fact, ring them up first or ring Skoda UK for confirmation.

Although they have ended the blanket replacement plan the dealer will assess your car on an individual basis and Skoda then decide if you get them changed for free.

Phil,

What date did they end this, as mine was done last year and a mates was done this year, he just drove in, they looked at the letters and replaced FOC, without even a call to Skoda UK.

Also, when I had mine done the dealer told me coil packs were covered up to five years.

Not sure what date they changed the rules, all I know is what the Briskoda resident VAG tech. told me.

What's wrong with your Octavia ? Simple. It's not a Fabia vRS. :D

:iagree: Bugg4r bet me to it

Hmmm, little slow for my tastes, other than that nice enough.

O.K. will be at dealers at 9:00 tomorrow. What's the concensus, foc or not?

"I knew free parts would appeal to a Scot" (True we scots do prefer the foc option).

The car is 5 years and 2 months old if that matters.

Great post - must check this out on mine. Nice pics Goochie

Went to the dealers this morning about the dodgy coil pack, they said they would have to send a request to skoda uk. They are going to get back to me later on today. I also phoned skoda uk who said the coil packs had a 5 year warenty and since mine was 2 months over it was at the dealers discretion, as well as that they only replace broken ones, so if they are wrong type but working they don't get replaced.

2 things:

1. You shouldn't drive your car far with a broken coilpack - unburnt fuel will get into the exhaust and may bu99er your cat.

2. You can easily diagnose which is the broken one by taking the engine cover off and disconnecting the electrical connectors to the coilpacks one by one. If the engine gets even rougher, it's not that one. If it stays the same, that's the broken one.

Bet it's No 2.

Bet it's No 2.

lol!

And if it's any help I can supply anyone with a copy of the original Skoda bulletin. Fax or e.mail/messenger.

Rich,

Might be an idea to post it up, I know it used to be on here a while ago, but seems to have gone missing.

I was under the impression that it cut the fuel to the misbehaving cylinder?
