Clutch cylinder pipe seal leaking nightmare

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Just fitted a new Sach master cylinder to my 2006 Octy 1.9 tdi and no matter what I tried I just could not get the hard pipe to stop leaking where it clips into the cylinder.

Be also aware that the black top hat shaped pipe end seal WILL be stuck inside you old cylinder and has NOT tumbled below your engine as I assumed it had.

NOTE: Both master and slave cylinder connections are the same.

If you do have to order a seal kit you may well get an 'O' ring in the bag, you DO NOT need this, all you need is the "top hat" shaped seal which as the video below shows MUST be firmly pushed on to the end of the hard pipe until you can almost feel and even hear it click into place.

I do hope this helps someone, I went through a week of hell with this frustrating and painful job!

Good luck,

John

Good info, thanks for posting.  Just needs the word master changing to slave in the first sentence for avoidance of confusion.

Actually, it may well be the same sealing arrangement at the master cylinder end for all I know, but you do mention engine bay, so I think it was that end?

Oh yes Wino a bit confusing between my post re: master cylinder connection and the video about the slave cylinder end... but both the master and the slave cylinder pipe connections are the same.

It is such a ridiculously simple bit of knowledge to avoid a bloody nightmare which folk really need to know?

BTW The video guy says you cannot get the seals alone and you must get the full "hard pipe". You can get just the seals I think I got the seals from... http://www.dmkeith.com/skoda/servicing/parts/?gclid=CjwKEAjwm7jKBRDE2_H_t8DVxzISJACwS9Wb0fDP7n4oz6P9GCnJr6k9cL7wQCJUyxmp8iifDtTeZhoCBuvw_wcB

Brilliant! Change the slave cylinder on my Skoda Octavia 1.9TDI. Didn't notice the top hat left in the old cylinder. Now's all good. Many thanks for posting.

Sorry but my boredom tolerance would not permit me to listen to yet another long Youtube monologue (over 6 minutes) to learn something that could be written in a few words as you did or spoken in one sentence.

you have however probably resolved a long mystery on my MK1 Octavia, another example of garages making a good reliable car into an unreliable money spinner.

My chauffeur pal ahd the gearbox rebuilt under warranty before selling to me, fluid was leaking from the slave cylinder joint and emptying the reservoir, the resultant clutch drag caused stalling and trouble restarting which together with a failing DMF which they should have replaced caused the clutch to chew through the bellhousing.

It was my first week in France and for the first and last time in my life fell into the clutches of the motor trade, €150 labour plus parts sounded OK, a €1500 bill after he had removed the gearbox and immobilised the car was not so neither was all the other faults he created.

The union was still leaking, it had to be a new cylinder he lied, the seal is not available, he fitted and charged for a new cylinder and of course it still leaked, by that time i was repairing all the other bodges like broken wiring connectors, anti-roll bar disconnected etc so bodged the union by pulling it together and retaining it with a collar or 2 pack epoxy putty.

It lasted 13 years and 200000 miles but even after that time I was still wary of remaining in gear at the lights.

Its ironic that I should have found a thread explaining the problem I have and I was the last person to post.

I was replacing the clutch master cylinder that is tucked away behind the DPF, not visible and has to be done by feel, I made the mistake of putting the seal in the cylinder and then fitting the pipe to the cylinder, not helped by it having to be introduced at an angle. I can now see that it was never going to work.

Spent most of yesterday trying to bleed the system & wondering where all the air was coming from & all the fluid was going to, the leak was not visible & the fluid running between the bulkhead and the insulation.

Too much snow to continue today so I am without a car due to being without a memory!

I just skimmed through the video again, the relevant part is 6 seconds long yet the video is six and a half minutes long

What is it with these people?
