Started engine without oil in oil filter

Featured Replies

Did an oil change this weekend and made a big mistake....

New oil filter had 0 oil in it and when I started her up there was a nasty noise for about 1 second.

Seems to run ok but engine ticking... cant be sure if it was like this before.

Will it be OK?

Should i dump the oil for fresh now?

Thanks

If its the 2.0 tsi i have never heard of anyone filling the oil filter with oil before putting on the engine (screws to the top of the block). How would you do that without it all coming back out?

@useyourname - OK, I'm not totally familiar with the layout of this engine, but it's far from unusual to change cartridge filters on all sorts of cars without priming the new filter (so dry apart from the line+pump from sump to filter intake), and if anyone takes precautions it's along the lines of letting the engine idle for 5s after it fires!

I don't think the time it took you to change the oil was enough to completely dry out the engine and cause any damage before new oil starts rushing in. Not a mechanic so I may be wrong....

Its 2.0 TFSI with cartridge filter under engine.

For my 2,0 TDI I never fill the filter with oil and nothing bad has happened.

Maybe it's different for petrol versions but somehow I don't believe in that.

It won't of done any damage what so ever, the noise heard is normal, i have been in the trade for 22 years so done god knows how many oil & filter changes, the only thing i do is a smear of oil on the O ring an spin on type filters or if cartridge type then change the O rings and make sure they screw on the threads proparly as most have plastic housings. I never prim the filters.

Sadly some engines especially VW Group engines can have weaknesses from Fundamental Design & Manufacturing & Component choices

and it is good to use Specialist Independent Techs or Mechanics because 'Jack of all trade & old school ones' are often inclined to say i have done hundreds the way i do and never had any complaints...

See Timing Chain / Hydraulic Tensioner,  it matters with some engines and for some owners,

the difference might be £5,000 saved from a bit of knowledge.

The problem with the tsi engine is you can't sucsessfully prime the system with both type of filter, the spin on screws on "upside down" and the cartridge type will drain the oil back as soon as you take the housing off. The anti drain back valves only work once the engine has been fired up and oil pressure built up as they rely on a "sealed system" and all engine that rely on hydraulic tensioners for timing chains are in effect ticking time bombs not just VAG units.

Have you noticed that you can prime the Silver Filters that VW went over to before fitting up top?

Yes, but you still loose some of the oil from the filter as u turn it up side to screw on, so you still get a brief second of metal to metal contact and low oil pressure when firing up, the anti drain back valve only works it's best when you fire up and build up oil pressure.

i fit the vw filter to my own car as i do prefer it, as there is less mess if you do prime it, not that i do.

I know you do lose some of the oil.

As it is i would never personally use their *VW / Audi marked* crap filters on my own vehicles.

Not because i can get cheaper, but better ones for less money.

But then as you know i would never darken a Halfords Service Centres door.

As for Kwik Fit and fast foot dancers and chancers and old practices where some get away with it and a seemingly lack of understanding of engines, that is scary.

It will be fine.  Relax
