Terrible fuel consumption

I checked this morning using dot matrix display:

Total journey 4.5 miles

Oil temperature showed up first time at 51 degrees, after driving 2.6 miles.

At the end of my journey, oil temperature was 74 degrees, water 90.

Exactly the sort of journeys which cry out for a modern petrol engine

hence the poor fuel economy

Went on long journey today.

From Heathrow to Northampton, 60 mph, average consumption by Maxidot 78 mpg B)

From Northampton to Heathrow, 65 mph, average consumption by Maxidot 72 mpg

Woow! This is what I was expecting from this car and so happy.

Exactly the type of journeys that cry out for a diesel engine

hence the excellent and vastly improved fuel economy

WELL DONE ROBERTINO YOU'VE ANSWERED YOUR OWN QUESTIONS

  • Constant 5 miles on a modern diesel is not a good journey profile even if it only takes 15 minutes at an average of only 20 mph (which is pretty good for urban London by the way) 1. Diesel engine

  • Of course, a cold engine will use 2 or 3 times more fuel when it is first started than when it is up to temperature. You have first the increased engine friction when the metal & oïl are cold

  • I regularly get 70+mpg (sometimes 80+) on my 1.6tdi manual (38miles mostly motorways and mostly 50mph average) - shorter journeys will be mid to low 40s.  I don't bother with the Eco setting as it doe

Thank you all for help and advice!

Honestly don't know how much difference the 'premium' fuels really make. I stick with regular BP petrol because there's only one petrol station anywhere near where I live, and those nice people from BP have decided that a lack of competiton is an opportunity to fleece us something rotten even for the Heinz 57 regular juice.

If the V Power helps keep your engine sweet that's great, but I'm not sure it would make any meaningful difference to economy - you're on the money there anyway.

Did 18 miles on motorway with some slow moving traffic +14 miles in central London. 4 passengers +me +4 suite cases in the boot. Look at this amazing mpg figure:

This thread needs to be renamed to "Fantastic fuel efficiency" :D

I bought it because of promised amazing mpg. EGR can be disconnected - it does enough harm - hot air and all that black stuff going into engine. DPF - I`m not rich enough to replace it at 1.5k, will have to try those special cleaning products.

if you blank off your EGR it will take even longer to warm up.

as everyone has said your engine isn't at temp or doing a long enough journey to see actuate MPG's, also maxi dot is not real life mpg either so its probably a little less than it reads out. take your car on a real run like 50+ miles  and then report back.

Also as you said driving like an old lady, if you're driving with low RPM's to help fuel what you're actually doing is killing your DMF and also with it not getting up to temp probably your DPF in the long run.

sell the car and buy a petrol

Where do you get the temp figures from?

On the end of right hand side stalk there are two buttons - up and down. Use them to scroll via Maxidot menu to see all data.

What I have also noticed is - if its a really hot day like last weekend, mpg drops considerably. I was driving in a city this weekend in a day time and then at night. What a difference to consumption it made driving at night in a cold weather - way more mpg!

I got 24.3mpg this morning on my 18 mile commute.

M42 was ruined so I took some back roads and drove 'enthusiastically' to make up time.

I get average 60+ mpg. But I`m driving like a gran at 60 mph and being very gentle on accelerator. Can`t ask for more mpg, this is as good as it gets.
