cheers in advance

You can make anything work if you have the time, the skill and most importantly the money.

However, you'd need to rebuild the engine with low compression pistons, fabricate a new exhaust manifold and fit and map a complete standalone engine management system with new fuel injectors, an intercooler and a myriad of other work.

This level of commitment may be beyond you, you could pay someone else to do it but I conservatively estimate it would cost about £5k.

Ok?

Don't bother, just do full drain down oil changes, use Mobil 1 oils for engine & only use Shell vpower..also fit NGK iridum tipped spark plugs & use Magnacor competition spark plug leads....& a better air filter or make up a full CAI & then a nice Remus exhaust....

The engine always sounder sweet, & it would head-butt the rev limiter no problem....& was faster than a stock version...

Enjoy one of the best 1.4 nat asp engines ever made....you can get racing cams (schrrick?) for it & think 3 different opening durations, & a stage 2 remap would be required.

That was offered by ABT & pushed it to 140bhp....

If you wanted a turbo you could do a 1.8t swap.

Hi Skodamadmike,

Don't forget that you'd need to get an insurer to agree to cover something pretty unique, once engineered;  Fabdavrav's advice sounds good to me, and a more realistic option.

Richard

(On my second re-mapped Skoda PD diesel, have had 1.4 and now 1.9.)

Plenty on here doing/done that 1.8Turbo petrol transplant, seemingly to good effect.

thanks for all your replys glad can get good advice mabey turbo this little car is a bit to much money i only paid a 10er for the car but she dose me fine fabdavrav think i may go the way you suggested dose anyone no why when it hits red line between gears it bogs down and can  i change this in anyway i am new to all this not how to do certin bit on cars but not everything yet lol

cheers everyone

'Bogging down' is you hitting the rev limiter, peak power is at 6200 RPM, change gear no later than then otherwise you'll be going slower, not faster.

When I floored mine I would change up before the start of the red line... if in 2nd or 3rd I happened to still be really flooring it & not change up it would continue into the red zone & then hit the rev limiter (7200) to protect the engine. The rev limiter cuts some of the sparks out which stops the engine producing as much power & "bogs it down". Basically I would listen for the right sound just as it hits the 5600 to 6200rpm

If you get different cams & a remap, you will have the same but at a higher rev limit....its a safety feature to stop engine blow up....& I only hit the limiter about 4 times in 14yrs....of hard driving so WTF are you doing???

Well, he paid a tenner (10er) for the car, so he's driving it like he stole it because at that price, he did.

Let's hope he blows the engine before the inevitable enormous accident happens. I occasionally have to go over to Kent for work so I'll be keeping an eye out, although I suspect the 'old bill' will already be on it.

i dont race  around in it nor redline it all the time i just noticed once that when letting it hit red  line cruising on bypass  it bogs down as if its going to cut out so was asking why this is doing this

also never hit limiter

Ok, I can only work with the information you give me and now you're giving me a bit more to work with.

If the engine is bogging at high RPM then I would suggest you have ignition issues, possibly spark plugs, leads or coil pack(s).

Magnacor competition spark plug leads

do you have a link for which ones i need fabdavrav

Depends if your engine is an AUB or a BBZ, look under the boot carpet at the big sticker on the boot floor.

sepulchrave hi it only bogs down when hits red line any other time its fine it was sitting for 8 months before i brought it

as i say i dont intentionally red line it just noticed it when was going down a bypass and diddnt change gear in time lol though talking to the wife

That's fine, just tell us which engine code you have, it's an ignition issue, we need the code.

Ok, you don't have any ignition leads which means either your spark plugs are toast or a coil pack is breaking down (far more likely).

  • Author

ok so there are a few different coil packs which one will be for this engine

appreciate your time mate

You have four coil packs, one for each spark plug, if you have a code reader it will tell you which cylinder was misfiring.

The best thing you can do if you don't have access to a code reader is take out all four spark plugs (keep them in order) and inspect them, one will probably be a slightly different colour to the other three, this will tell you which coil pack is suspect.

As BBZ you have individual coil packs bolted to the top of each spark plug, much like any newer engine, mine as an older AUB engine so "traditional".

(6) 036 905 715 F ignition coil with spark plug connector   4

BKY
BUD
BBZ

Not bolted down, just pushed down and now very tight as the rubber seals will be gripping the sides of the spark plug access bores in the cylinder head. Try to ease them up using a couple of screwdrivers located diametrically opposite each other close in to the actual spark plug centre point and not out at the connector end.

Edit;- remember it is an alloy head so tightening torque should be lowish ie 30NM.

took the coil packs out and diddnt see any diffrents between the plugs but did notice that the plugs are as old as the car so need replacing could this be part of the problem

Yep.

It's not a part of the problem, it IS the problem. These engines eat spark plugs, they don't generally last past 20k unless they're Iridium.
