Order locked - what happens next?

Featured Replies

For better or for worse I've ordered through a broker, so I don't get much information about how my order is progressing.  I do know that from today my order is locked at the factory and can no longer be changed.  Does that mean the car will be built soon?  People who've ordered through dealers talk about 'status 20' and I think that's what the order being locked means.

I'd like to make sure my car isn't registered until September, mainly for the resale value in a few years' time.  I know delivery is a good month after build, but does anyone know at what point in the process the car is registered?

Status 20 is the committed build week at the factory, nothing can be added/removed from the build. As far as I know the car must be registered within days of being delivered to the dealer/broker.

I agreed with the dealer that my car will be registered as a 17 plate, with me taking delivery on 03 Mar 17.  The car was built on 17th Jan and landed in the UK on 30th Jan.  It was with the dealer from Feb 10th and they agreed to hold it until I could collect it and to also delay registration.  This wasn't an issue as it was something that was agreed in advance of me making the order, back in November.

I think you should contact the broker to see if they have any 'rules' on registering/delivery of the car.  Anything that's verbally agreed should be ideally backed up with written confirmation.   Good luck.

My car was ordered using Carfile back in November 2016 (2 days before the price increase). I made it a condition of placing the order that even if the car arrived well before the 1st of March I would not be required to take delivery as per the T & C's and the car would be a 17 plate. Car arrived at dealers early February, I collected 1st March and the car was a 17 plate.

But not all brokers work like Carfile. With Carfile they simply make an introduction for you with their dealer who you do all the final negotiations with regarding spec, PX (if you have one), delivery date, finance etc. and pay your deposit and final monies to. Your only contact with Carfile is the initial enquiry e-mail you send and their call back a few hours later (within normal working hours of course) to confirm you really exist. They then send your details to thier delaer who contacts you (in my case) within hours. First time I used them it was within minutes literally.

Not all brokers are equal, there are sharks out there.

Thanks all.  My broker has been a pleasure to deal with so far, and has confirmed the car won't be registered until September :)
