Diesel emissions.....

The Equa index exposes the issue of some main manufacturers have failed to produce engines and systems that work in the real world and in the petrol world both BMW Mini and Ford, both sadly with engine plants in the UK are shown to need to do a lot to get the emission where they should be. Carbuyer/Equa data..

A new index of cars’ nitrous-oxide (or NOx) emissions shows that in real-world driving conditions, far more of the latest petrol engines than diesels come close to matching their claimed NOx emissions figures from official tests. The new ‘EQUA index’ is independent of both the government and motor industry, which its operator Emissions Analytics says guarantees “complete transparency and a level playing field”.     It has come about partly in response to the recent VW emissions scandal, and to contentions that the official European emissions test (called the New European Driving Cycle, or NEDC) doesn’t reflect real-world driving conditions.  Unlike that test, which produces either a pass or fail result, the EQUA index is a series of grades that should allow consumers to more easily compare how various models fare. The grades tell you how close a car comes to the current EU Euro 6 emissions standard in everyday driving.  They run from A to H, with A indicating a car comes within 0.08 grams per kilometre of its official NOx emissions figure in everyday driving. Grade B means it comes within 0.12g/km and cars graded A or B are considered to be conforming with Euro 6 in ‘real-world’ conditions.  Grades C, D and E mean that on the road, the car is only meeting the older Euro 5, 4 or 3 limit respectively. Grade F is equivalent to six to eight times the Euro 6 limit, G means eight to 12 times Euro 6 and H corresponds to more than 12 times the Euro 6 limit in everyday driving.  Nearly every petrol engine claimed to comply with Euro 6 was rated ‘A’, with the notable exception of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol in the Ford Focus, which could only manage an ‘E’ grade, while the MINI hatchback’s 1.5-litre engine was rated ‘C’.        In contrast, only seven out of 62 Euro 6 diesel models tested for the index were rated ‘A’.

EU Governments & UK Governments will just have to set out the legislation clearly from 2019 for Car Manufacturers on what will happen if they cheat and lie to Authorities and Governments about Tests and test results and if the lie and cheat the customers.

Set out penalties that will really hit the most senior management in their personal bank accounts and maybe earn them prison time.

Also corrupt Civil Servants and Government Employees or elected members as well.

Not going to happen though is it!

The Governments have known for years now that the Car Manufacturers were doing it and just allowed it to continue.

No customer is going to be any better off from the cheating that has happened in the past and is happening still and it is everyone that is affected with the pollution and many are not drivers but might well use public transport and that is very polluting as well because again the Governments allow it to be.

To be used to partially fund more charging points which I gather they are chucking an extra £40M at.

And government want an increase in tax on vehicles/fuel.

They may not for a while as $50 a barrel looks like it has returned.

They will get a bit more revenue from waht they collect on the VAT on fuel and inflation is bad enough without adding more fuel to the fire.
