I doubt if we will see them over here within 12 months.

Filling in the deposit orders will take approx 18 months, and rumours are UK to start getting deliveries start of Q2 next year.  If you want one order then for Sept 18 reg ;)  or pop to BlueWater :)

Order went in a couple of months ago  but it is fully refundable if it is not what we want / can afford.

Because it's a yardstick the salesman is then going to use to sell you whatever he can up to that price, or ease finance onto you to up your budget. All good sales practices for the salesman and his monthly figures, but not a good sales tactic for generating good customer feelings and repeat business.

"How much has sir got to spend?"

"We have a budget of £XXX for an SUV."

"Then might I suggest Sir looks at this model..."

which is not the way to sell a customer what they want, more a way of selling the customer what's in stock. It removes all the sales talk about the cars they sell and drops straight onto "This is what you can afford".

Yes, absolutely right.

How much a customer has to spend is not the salesman's business. We always spend a considerable amount of time making a long list of what we want in and from a car. Then we look at as many reviews as we can, and read specs, articles and whittle down options.

We then look for that model when we're out and about, even engaging with owners  in car parks, and getting feedback from them. Owners generally give you a warts and all opinion that's nearer to truth.

Then, and only then, we go to showrooms. Sadly only about 10% of cars make it through this process. We are picky ! It's OUR money.

So again, the op has done it exactly as we would have done. A buyer is going to spend a lot of money, make a big purchase, but I'd never divulge our ceiling price to a dealer, or how much we have to play with.  That's our business, not his.

Obviously you are one of the enlightened few like me who do this.

The vast majority of buyers go in to a garage on a whim as bored with their car or expecting it to cost a lot of money in the near future, with no real idea of what they want or how much it is going to cost, and end up buying what they have in stock as it will not occur to order and wait months for what they really need.

You only have to look at some of the strange shaped cars and awful colours on the road to see this in action.

I find that whenever a ceiling price is mentioned, the dealer considers it his target.

I prefer to haggle for a decent deal on the car I actually want, then inform the dealer the price is just above my ceiling.

But if he were to throw in a free service or something...

I agree with all of this and that is generally my approach.

There has been the odd occasion when I've bought on a bit of a whim but I've still negotiated a deal I was happy with.

The TT was a buying with the heart purchase but I didn't have much in the way of wriggle room. It was one of the last Mk. 2 roadsters, a special edition and a pretty rare colour. It was sitting in the showroom and no more were available in the country or being manufactured.

So it was either walk away or buy it. It's a keeper for when I retire fully and I love it.

When I replace the Yeti though I shall return to the well prepared and sensible mode!
