gear ratios in the dry 7 speed (Yr 2010) DSG

Featured Replies

Specifically 1st and 2nd;

I was towing the wheelie bin out a flat/incline free lane today, and noted (and not for the first time) ABSOLUTLY no difference in either percieved speed or speedo indicated speed, between 1st and 2nd, even when dropping back into 1st, changing up to 2nd, and indeed no dip in engine revs due to changing up.

Based on closely watching the interaction of the rev counter and speedo needle and D1/D2 indication on the dash.

How is this possible?

Does 1st gear even exist?

My DSG7 has a definite first gear. You can easily see and feel the difference. Have you tried shifting up and down manually?

Not on this occassion, but I did on past occassions, from recall,&  zero preceptible difference.

As you say LS I would expected to notice either an upchange or a downchange, especially if, as I understood 1st in the dry 7 speed is a super-low "granny"  gear to protect the dry clutch packs, from standing start torques/speed differences, and I can understand why this would only perhaps be needed for a few seconds until some momentum is achieved, but not to notice any preceptible changes, up or down.

very strange indeed

perhaps when I scrap her I will pull the gearbox asundry to satisfy my curiosity.

Oops!

my bad(recall)

So a definite change between 1st and 2nd using manual override, 2000rpm gives an indicated 10mph in 1st

then 2000rpm gives 15mph in 2nd.

In manual it took 2000rpm=10mph, in 1st,

before 2nd would even be accepted, on a level stretch of roadway,

I tried for 1st multiple times at lower speeds/revs, without success.

So merely a software gremlin prematurely  indicating the upchange to 2nd, while still actually in 1st.

But then what about the rest of the changes, cos ah haint seen 8th=7th actual, displayed yet.

mth.

Like @Longship says, there will be a ratio difference 1st to 2nd. If you find specs, you could calculate 1st vs 2nd MPH per 1000 rpm but better still you have tried it, So the DSG gear indicator seems to be non indicative sometimes. That did cross my mind reading your fault. It was in 2nd all the time. Not sure about 8th unless VAG have changed transmission manufacturer.

The gear indicator "should" be indicative of the actual gear or a part second delay if it is down shifting. If it is excessive, i.e not showing correct gear for lengthy periods of time more than a second, maybe you need to have it looked at, firmware updated or something else,
