Ignition live near rear of car

Featured Replies

Ive installed a rear dashcam to my car and have run the cable from the fusebox across the bottom of the doors and up to the roof into the tailgate. Problem im having is everytime the dashcam is switched on it causes the dab signal to dissapear.

I know its not the power supply as its the same one which runs the front camera and that doesnt affect it.

I assume its the long run of cable which is causing the issue hence why I want to find an ignition live in the boot so i can run the cable straight from there on a shorter run which might resolve my issue

There's a switched live going to the N/S/R light cluster which I used for my powered roof aerial, I just scotch blocked into it, can't remember what colour it was but it's easy to buzz out by pulling the plug off the cluster.

Nope there isnt one going to the light clusters I checked all of them

guess im going to have to run it from the cigarette lighter which is switched live and just bring the cable to the boot where I will fit the transformer for the USB

Unless you've modified it, the fag lighter is permanent 12V not ignition switched.

oh yeah, got it the wrong way round then thought they were ignition live.

back to square 1

Does that dash cam do the same thing when in the front of the car? It's a very strange scenario. A better USB cable may also fix it if it's got better shielding.

I know the estates have a 12v socket in the back of the car, but again it's a permanent live.

You can make the cigarette lighter a switched live with a relay and a quick snip of the positive wire. It's a job I keep meaning to do on mine.  Just energise the relay on something that is on the switched circuit.

yes tried swapping the cameras but the point about the cable is a good one, its a very cheap one so maybe I should try a quality one

You'll find decent cables have foil shielding along the inside, cheap cables not so much, usually it's non existent in those.
