Skodas price for DMF and clutch replacement

Recommended Posts

£1728, now to me that is very expensive. I understand that the parts are skodas own but why so dear?

I want to get the work carried out by them, as they know what they are doing and if anything goes wrong its on their head but I wont be getting it done with them at that price

Is it worth trying to bid them down?

Can anyone give me any advice on what to do? My DMF is making a bad noise and has been for a while now

Whereabouts are you? Someone may be able to recommend a garage. Skoda's price there is ridiculous, would expect at MOST to be half that.

I am based in Kent

Not sure which engine you have but I had a 1.9 PD Octavia 2 which was still under warranty when the clattering started - Noticed the problem almost immediately after I bought it, was probably there from the day I bought it but I was unaware of the relevance of the wee clang on turning off. Skoda dealer was happy(ish) to fit a new DMF but after a bit of perseverance was persuaded to do a SMF conversion under warranty. Dealer said the SMF kit fitted was a Sachs.

There are other kits available and not everyone is happy with the results of a SMF conversion. I had the car for a further 5 years 65000 miles and can't see any downside to converting - Should also be a lot less than £1728.

A new DMF was agreed to be fitted to mine (being a diesel) by the selling garage, and fitted at a Skoda Specialist garage.

The invoice was £1100 ish, and that was 6 years ago. I did not have a new clutch.

It was either Sachs or Luk kit as it comes with everything required.  I don't see the need to get genuine Skoda parts as they will be made by either one of the big clutch companies and you will be paying extra for the vag parts stamp.

What parts are of the same quality as Skodas but without the VAG stamp on them? This is why I am concerned with getting the work done by a local garage, I am worried they will use bad quality parts

As long as you go to a decent independant garage, i would not worry. Its not in their interest to fit poor parts and have you come back complaining. They wont want you back for a warranty claim, taking up workshop time and space. They tend to buy the parts anyway from established motor factors, ECP, Allparts etc. If in doubt, ask whose parts they will use. As pointed out, there is no reason whatsoever in paying for a Skoda box containing exactly the same parts, from the exact same manufacturer, for a lot more money. Skoda buy their bits in, just the same.

Sachs and Luk are the two biggest manufacturer so can't go wrong with either of one them as they are OEM brands.  I think also it was Luk that invented the DMF.

Just stick to established motor factors for parts and you be fine.
