what is the best free app for OB2 reader to turn off seatbelt bongs and change other things, tried carista, but they now charge

Hello,

I think Carista is the best option to be honest. Also allows you to do diagnostics on other vehicles too. I have enrolled on the beta users of Carista and have the full version for free :) . You can do the same, just go to their website and folow their details. http://www.caristaapp.com/beta/

Have used the App for clearing errors on ABS, window modules etc on different cars after fixing the faults, very handy App.

I was thinking of enrolling as a beta tester, but what can you do if the app makes a hash of something like your headlights for instance? I believe the beta version of the app can enable high beam assist,

Yeh that can be tricky. You can always use the reset function from the Car menu in the vehicle. Also certain functions would need the correct hardware so there may be option to do a customisation but it won’t work because of missing HW.

carista support is pretty good. They email back pretty quick. So if it all goes really wrong I think you will get good support...

Just a safety question. How will you feel if a passenger dies because they were not reminded to fasten their seat belt? A regular adult passenger of mine never fastens it unless they hear the bongs.  No doubt you dislike being reminded to do anything sensible,  it takes all sorts, but please think of others safety.

I was on the fence on this but i think if the bong was gone there may be an instance where i might forget. The washer bong annoys me more as it continues to remind you sporadically audibly and flashes the warning on the maxidot.

The washer bong usefully reminds you that your car is illegal. Just drop into any cheapo supermarket or petrol station and buy a bottle of water or windscreen wash.

Washers are one of the things that should be checked regularly especially in winter.

I had Carista when I had my Mk1 Fabia. I'm also enrolled as a beta tester so have full access to make changes. That being said, I now counsel against using Carista for making changes to your car software. I've got a FL O3, the changes made are not transparent. You have no way of knowing what changes are being made to the code of your car. There is no log file to reverse changes. I find that there is little explanation behind the option toggles in the Carista app. Do you really want to risk messing up your car with no way to fix it?

If you have an Android phone, get OBDeleven. I invested in VCDS. You have more control over what is going on with either of these two options.
