Had my first off last night

Featured Replies

Well I suppose it had to happen at some point but had my first slid down tarmac last night,

Lucky it was only at about 30 - 35mph and I did have all my gear on but it still wasn't pleasant,

Was slowing down at the time and was already off the power as I could see the van in front of the fiesta in front of me had stopped but Mr fiesta hadn't then instead of changing lanes decided to park in middle of them and slam on,

I braked behind him as I didn't want to pass him in case he set off again and next second I was laid on floor watching bike slide down road, it happened in an industrial estate area so am wondering if I run over a patch of diesel or something as I wasn't braking that hard as I'd seen what was going off in front.

I'm quiet fortunate as i fitted a set of crash bungs to sides of it and they seem to have just about saved it from any major damage and I walked away with just bruises although my 8 month old RST jacket is now bin material.

Bugger.

Sorry to hear it!

you're okay though n thats the main thing. Learning curve i guess!

Very unlucky. At least you and the bike are ok. Perhaps you can find a decent replacement jacket on Ebay or similar. Hopefully your confidence isn't dented, sounds like you tried to do the right thing and got caught out by the surface. If you had overtaken the Fiesta propbably would have moved out as oer Sod's Law. I was stood up just after righting the bike exiting a 90 degree bend last week as the car driver  in front decided  to slam everything on unexpectedly....to save the 3 partridges sat on the road. Being patient and having a decent gap stopped it ended badly.

The kit worked

You'd get plenty of bad gravel rash at 30. glad to hear the bungs did their job too.

I'd check your lid for any scuffs as well. If you knocked the road you should really think about a new one.

I hit some gravel on a bad camber at similar speed and bounced down the road. I cracked a couple of ribs which wasn't pleasant for a while.

Juts get back on your horse as soon as you're able I suppose.

Any one you walk away from, as they say...

Happens to the best of us, mate. Just don't let it knock (har har) your confidence, or anything.

Glad that you are OK, bikes can be fixed. Get back on again as soon as you can.

Pleased to hear you were uninjured, the bike can be repaired,

On a side note, it's suprising to see the mumber of bikers in shorts and tee shirts riding about, I hate to think of the consequences of falling off.

Sounds like your correct clothing saved you from serious injuries.

Unlucky but at least you're ok and the bike too.

You can claim for spilt diesel but as it's only the jacket destroyed might not be worth the bump on your insurance renewal.

Give the bike a good check over before riding again. If you're not confident in what to look for he a dealer to check it out.

It makes me wonder what is running through peoples minds that don't put any proper kit on at all,

Parts to repair bike are on order so should be back on road by next weekend all been well once I've given it a good check over

Here in Spain few seem to wear any protective clothing, in God they trust.

Its bonkers isnt it.

I see alot that seem to skip gloves, even on the motorway.

The thought of a hand sliding across the ground at 70-80mph makes me cringe...

Utter sod of a thing to happen, but to take the most positive away from it in that you now have true first hand experience on how good gear can make a difference. My off was even slower but my leg was only technically still attached thanks to my boots and leathers, without them and due to location being over 90 minutes for an ambulance to reach, realistically I'd have just bled out. I wouldn't even take the bike to the end of the road without the lot on. Have you been back on the horse so to speak again since ok?

Seen folk in shorts and flip flops around Chesterfield. No other clothing in our 30C summer a while ago.  But they were wearing a helmet.B)

The skin grafting must be massive and even ground down bone and as you say with a hand that is nigh on impossible to rebuild.

absolutely. End up with nothing left.

I had a moment earlier. Wasnt thinking as well as normal.. caravan obscured a cyclist the whole time n as i overtook it went to overtake the cyclist. Feckin not good. Kicked myself as i never do stuff like that without looking up the inside aswel, but everyone makes mistakes i guess.

3rd gear and 100% throttle pulled me out of it, all or nothing getting up to 100. What a knob i thought.. when i got past.

He should of checked his mirrors too, but it was my fault for putting myself in that position. still ****ed about it. Havent done anythin stupid like that for years...

Ouch. Maybe they werent so lucky.

It's one of those. **** happens. Sometimes you've just gotta grab either the brakes or the power and hope it pulls you out.

I was pig sick. Its been so long since i've done something daft like that that and i do know better. But eh nevermind. Luckily the Tracer's quite good at random tugs on the throttle without mashing the box.

A lad was off his bike this morning at the large roundabout by Showcase cinemas, Birstall this morning. There is a diesel slick going round it about a metre wide by 20 metres long no doubt from one of the haulage firms round by Birstall. The rider looked OK but ****ed off , didn't really get chance to look at his bike.

Passed a woman doing 60+ on a scooter on the A90 last week. Wearing 3/4 length jeans and a helmet.

Guy on an older Fireblade yesterday in Fife with Tee shirt on and no gloves.

I rode around town occasionally in jeans but I always wore a gloves and a jacket as a minimum. I've seen the mess guys are in falling off a bicycle at 20mph never mind with a 200Kg bike pinning them to the ground at the same time.

New gloves bought today,

Also brake levers arrived so fitted them tonight as well,

Just waiting on coolant hoses, black silicone replacements and gear selector rod that I noticed was cracked,

Then decide if I'm getting myself a new helmet or not

if you have any doubts about your helmet then replace it. It will nag at you if you don't.

What bike do you have?

I agree with him
