Crack In Windscreen

Featured Replies

WindscreenSo driving home last night I noticed a 4-5 inch crack in my windscreen coming out of the camera area - I did hear a crack the day before but didn't see anything so drove on happily.

Once I parked up yesterday I noticed that in the camera area there are a number of cracks with the largest spreading into the one that I noticed - now to complicate matters I am driving to France tomorrow and AutoGlass (My insurers preferred company) can't do the replacement today.

AutoGlass are looking to get a company on France to replace it when I am there - my concern is whether it is safe to drive - I am guessing it is as it is laminated so I think I will risk it.

I tried other companies (Direct Line will pay £200 towards a 3rd party minus my £75 excess) however they are quoting £480 so I don't really want to pay £400 for the sake of a few days.

So my query is what would other people do and do you think it is safe to just carry on and risk it???

I think your only potential problem is if the crack extends across your sight line and the local PCs decide it's not safe.

If not, you should be fine until the repair can be completed.

Go for it - enjoy your holiday.

:) Yes I think thats what I am going to do - Leaving 4am tomorrow so I doubt anyone would notice it to be fair.

Plus I have spent the past three hours fruitlessly trying to sort it and SWMBO has give me a massive list of stuff to do to get ready for holiday and I have not managed to tick one thing off yet!!!

The French police are very much like our own - I guess that's European harmonization for you!

Sure they can be a pain in the arse but you have to be pretty unlucky to run into them. Try to speak even a little French (they like that) at least say a formal "good morning" or whatever. Then if it does get questioned just say it happened two hours ago.

Well the cracks getting bigger in the sun so hopefully it doesn't explode before tomorrow morning!!

Trying to converse in broken French/English with the French version of Autoglass to arrange for it to be fixed when we get over there - I am slowly....loosing....my mind!!!!

my windscreen cracked today after some object hit it going to work! just booked it in with Autoscreens through their website, was a painless affair (apart from me having to pay the £75 excess!). they are coming out on Wednesday.

1st brand new car and never had a screen replaced ever in 30 years of driving, car only done 2k! doh!

Pop to Halfords and get a repair kit? http://www.halfords.com/motoring/paints-body-repair/scratch-repair-paint-restorers/rain-x-windscreen-repair-kit

Supposedly good for cracks upto 12 inches and might be enough to last until you are back. You can still get the windscreen repaired when on your way or when you are back in the UK?

Well its on there just waiting for it to cure in the bright Bristol sunshine :D

Not sure if its totally masked the crack yet, but if it makes it stronger and lasts at least till we get to France that will be something!!

Thank you Spinnaker - its not perfect by any stretch but certainly looks better and if it adds to the strength that will be enough (hopefully)

Modern windscreens are made to be light therefore as thin as possible.

finnster01, glad it made things a little better. Good luck with the trip!
