Rear spoiler installation question

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I've bought rear spoiler for liftback from SuperSkoda. Supprisingly it has no only double sided sticky lines but also two (or more) wholes for mounting.

Has anyone installed such thing? Am I supposed to drill wholes in the trunk door, by the way no other mounting bolts or brackets are present in the delivery.

Pictures attached.

Are the holes actually  for fixing or part of the moulding  process. The holes could also be to release any moisture.

I recently fitted a boot lip protector and I bought some halfords double sided tape and added more to make it more secure. The sticky tape is very good but the boot surface need to be cleaned with a de-greaser.  I'd run more sticky tape between the red stripes.

The holes are not for mounting. The tape is more than adequate.

Is it a Lip Spoiler ?

Plentey of tape should be sufficient as SC03OTT says, personally I'd add a bit more.............

There are plenty of youtube videos of other brands what use double sided tape. I've seen installers add additional silicone adhesive. I bought a genuine spoiler for my Octavia and drilled the four holes in the boot lid AND added my own double sided tape - more for creating a barrier to moisture than anything else.

As above, if it's the lifted spoiler it'll most likely need holes drilling in the boot lid.

Yours looks more like a lip spoiler, so the tape should do. If you're not planning on removing it then you could always use some tiger seal. It's an incredibly strong sealant used for car parts. Usually applied with a calk gun.

About £8 iirc from Halfords etc.

The tape will be fine.

I wouldnt use Tiger Seal. Mainly because I'm useless with these things and I'd have excess spilling out from all angles.

Installed. The tapes are strong enough, tested them, spoiler can hold a man trying to break it down by putting whole man weight on top of it. Feeling confident.

I was alone, took me a while to put it exactly how I wanted it - till the last milimeter but it's ok.

Sticky tapes are two - one can be peeled off left to right, the other the opposite way.

This way you can adjust as start then peel of end to end.

Result - makes me happy each time I see it.

Thanks all! Few fast taken pictures.

Looks very nice. The spoiler seems to finish the boot Lid off.

That looks so good I've just bought an unpainted one which I'll spray black and then fit to my white SEL to complement the pan roof.

Am I right in saying you used no additional glue or tape at all?  The pack only has the spoiler and no de-greaser either. I'm a newbie to any body work so please forgive me but will washing up liquid not de-grease enough!?

no dont use washing up liquid (contains salts that will destroy your paint and rust the car if you have exposed metal or deep chips). you need an isoproponol based solvent which you can dilute if you want to. for small areas i just use brake cleaner and wipe off the residue with a clean microfiber, you can use panel wipe (no residue), Gtechnic do it an expensive version called PW.

if you are worried it will come off then get sikaflex 221, its the stuff bodyshops use to bond body kits to cars.

@DaveBrez, no additional glue. Just the 3M that it comes with. So far so good ..

I used degreaser but just a little and wiped it very fast..

A good wash and a towel will do it as well.

Don't worry just do it. Bear in mind you have to line it, mark, then the sticky  3M lines are to fix both ends (one starts fron right to open it, the other from left). Be careful and press it just if you are sure ;)

Good luck!

Many many thanks. I've sprayed the spoiler a few times so if it dries nicely I may get a chance to fit it very soon. I'll post a pic of the result as you did. Cheers

Hi DaveBrez…did you sand the primer on the spoiler or did you spray directly over the primer and how is the paint holding on? Thanks

@TommyFlash It is 5 years since @DaveBrez signed in but it would be good to know if the paint stayed on ok.

It is just simply clever to sand / key what ever you get and then a little light primer done and even sand that, then colour.

Thanks for the help 👍
