Bike rack/carrier

Featured Replies

I need to find a boot mounted bike carrier for my Octavia.

It'll probably only ever be a single bike, though wold consider I expect for 2-3.

I can't justify the cost of getting a tow bar installed, or purchasing roof bar, so that leave boot mounted.

The car is a 06 Mk 2, no spoiler, and not an estate which seems to make it harder to find one that is compatible.  I know that because of the glass going all the way to the top I'll need some form of extras kit that replaces the hooks with dumb bell like items that are trapped inside the boot.

Any recommendations would be gratefully received.

Saris Bones. 2 or 3 bike rack. Needs a replacement for the top hooks as you say. Check their webbie.

Thanks for the reply.

Do the Saris Bones 2 & 3 sit entirely on the metal section of the boot?  If the upper "feet" sit on the glass I assume you have disabled the rear wiper?

Never been a fan of the Saris Bones and other boot mounted racks as I've seen too many at the side of the road getting secured again mid trip or worse fail. I'd rather shove the bike in the car, mess and all. Seasucker bike racks might be what you need but they aren't particularly cheap either.

I know what you mean, but I can't justify the cost of towbar installation or roof rack.

Luckily it's only short distances that I'll be travelling.

I used to use rear mounted bike carriers on a polo hatch.

I borrowed a friends Saris bones a few times initially, it was ok, quite well made but heavy.  I bought a thule rear mounted carrier (might have been a 9105, was quite a while ago now) and it was a bit more lightweight and I found easier to deal with. Both of them were a bit of faffing fitting before the ride.

Thule don't seem to list any rear fit carriers as compatible for the Oct II hatch presumably due to the glass in the tailgate you refer to. But if you are using a different tether set up at the top they may work with the modified set up.

@tomsimmons I've just noticed you have a MK2 Octavia which I have the Thule foot pack and fixing kit for which you can have for the cost of postage. You will only need some 118cm roof bars (my brother took my bars) for which you can pick up cheap second hand, the same with a Thule Pro Ride 591 bike rack.

I think a roof rack mounted unit will be better especially if you can pick up the pieces on a budget per @CWARD offer of help. The 591 is a really nice unit, also had one of them a while ago. Wish I'd never have sold it.

What is the foot pack and fixing kit?  Looking online it appears to be the attachment for the horizontal bars to the mounting points within the cars body?  Maybe I'm being daft, but I assumed the roof bars came with these?

Tom

The rough bars are generic and you need a foot pack to fit the shape of the car so that the bars sit in the right place and height. The fixing kit is then specific to the car in how it secures to foot pack to it. In the case of Octavia there is small hole in door open that they hook into then tighten into place. You can buy each part of the roof bars separate so you can transfer between different cars.

You can pick the roof bars ( the actual bars) for as little as £10 on ebay

or if you wanted new the Halfords Exodus bars in 120cm will fit at £63

Thule 591 Pro Ride has been replaced with the 598 so you can pick up new ones for about £60 for those with old stock or second hand around £40

CWARD, if tomsimmons does not want your Thule foot pack and fixing kit, I would be interested.

I have a pair of Thule roof bars from my old Octy estate, reading your post, I could use your foot pack and fixing kit and my old roof bars for my new (to me) Octy hatch?

Thanks either way.

Tom has just let me know he's getting  a new full kit so if you want them I'll PM you postage quotes once I've weighed them. Might not be until next week though as I have a busy weekend.

Yes please. Absolutely no urgency though. Thanks.

No problem. If you've not heard from me by next week then please give me a nudge
