Parking Over Driveway

Featured Replies

My neighbour has gone on holiday and has parked his car in way that I am having problems getting in and out of my driveway. The car is parked on the road in front of his driveway, which means if I have to reverse out of mine I have to either take a few manoeuvres or go backwards on the other side of the road then turn since this a main road this is a no no. Reversing into the  is just the same hassle. My wife says he can do what he wants it's in front of his driveway but I say it's a dangerously parked and could cause a Accident. Who is right?.

as far as i am aware your wife is right.  in theory you shouldnt block sa dropped kerb but its his dropped kerb...   may be an inconvenience but not a safety issue imho unless blocking visibility from a junction.

If he can park on the road can you not as well?

Do you mean that his parking makes your driving dangerous rather than his car is a danger to road or pavement users where it is?

It's blocking my view because I have the car on one side and a tree on the other side blocking my view. When possible I always reverse into my drive so I can drive forward out. I understand why he has blocked it because he has another car on the driveway but plenty of space outside his house to park it.

Surely there are more important things to worry about.

Get a life he's done it to protect his property while on holiday.

It seems like people are less considerate to one another these days including neighbours.

For example, I can't tell you how many cigarette nubs i have found in my garden and driveway that I have had to repatriate.

Protecting his house; I am sure a thief wouldn't have any problems circumventing the car - does he not have a garage.

Protective of the dropped kerb and driveway in case some one uses it as turning place or parking place....

His girlfriend's car is in the drive. He does park in front of my house from time to time even when nothing is in front of his.

I don't think anything can be done re your neighbours car opposite, only if it's partially or fully over your immediate driveway (on your side of the road)

I have this all the time but usually it's their visitors that park and block my drive  leaving theirs free. I don't know why I just put it down to them being stupid and/or ignorant.

When my visitors arrive I first check they are not blocking any neighbours driveways/access but they usually park on my drive.

The biggest gripe I have is with their trademen, they have a good deal call and do work (they must have renovated the house around three times in 10 years and had extensions, seems all quiet atm but something else will turn up sooner or later) Anyways the vans, trucks that block my drive and leave theirs free is incredible, I don't see why they do that as they have room to park over there. If true be told I don't think SWMBO over the road likes the vans on the drive or outside her house. Now if it's a nice big BMW or Merc visiting they somehow get them on the drive but they'll have to move one of their Mercs first, guess where that ends up, yep blocking someone else's drive further down the close.

I've got to the point now were I don't care where my visitors park, if it's blocking someone in, tough, that's the way other folk are!

My immediate neighbour (next door) is fine, we sort of think along the same lines and help one another out re parking, I loaned him the use of my drive if he has loads of visitors (party etc), I can fit around 4 small cars on it nose to tail and still room for mine at the side.

When you look around most folks have more than one car at the house these days, some 3 and 4 with no room to park them, they end up annoying others with where they park them, sign of the times.

And just to add if I really wanted to f--- up my neighbours parking arrangements (two houses opposite) I could leave my car parked on the road outside my house (legally) without blocking anyones access to the their own drive, or even impeding entrance or exit from them. It's just they will have nowhere else to park as doing so they will block each other in, such is the road layout in the close  But I know if I did that my car will most likely get pranged by some moron who can't drive trying to do a turn around, as I live in a cul de sac.

If you absolutely cant stand the neighbours parking or other behaviours...move.

Unless it's a private road, or the space outside of your house is a marked parking bay owned by you legally they aren't doing anything wrong.

Anyone can park anywhere on a highway so long as there are no traffic orders preventing it.

So I could park my car outside your house and there's nothing I'd be doing wrong legally.

Gman- as cars are parked on driveway, I'd suggest that means a properly constructed dropped kerb with planning permission, which restricts parking across it. As for parking close to it, or across the road- not a lot you can do. of course in olden days you'd have what I have with neighbour across the road- an understanding.

Mick- only cure if it's blocking your dropped kerb- do what I've done- everytime your drive is blocked- go and get offender to move. They soon get the message.

It's my understanding that is they had blocked you in your drive that is illegal since it prevents your escape from the property in an emergency. If you're block out or entering your drive that is a civil matter and the police won't really get involved.

Here he seems to be inconveniencing you which again won't get you much traction from the police.

Do you know anyone with a tractor, they could 'accidentally' drag it a few feet down the road.

Or get some of these - https://www.amazon.com/Vehicle-Dolly-Skate-Swivel-Wheels/dp/B000M4F73O

And move the car where you like.

Or anonymously tip off the police that there are some suspicious Arabic pamphlets and bottles of chemicals in the boot which are making you worried.

Take the number plates off and report it as an abandoned vehicle.

Lots of fun to be had

at the end of the day, right or wrong its not very neighbourly...…………...bit like letting the air out of tyres.

Which is classed as criminal damage.

Parking can raise blood pressure. It is a symptom of modern age. My sister lives near a school so I don't have to tell you the twice a day hassle that brings. My neighbour one side has 4 cars and my neighbour on the other side has two cars and a van. Sometimes he parks partly over my drive so he can get his other car out which is parked in his drive. He is a builder so he has been helpful in loaning me tools and getting me out of a fix if I am stuck on a job. I suppose tolerance is needed towards our fellow man.

Few folks seem to realise that if a car blocks your exit ( even parked on a drive with no dropped kerb) , thn the offence of OBSTRUCTION occurs. Not a major points offence, I think the penalty is a measly fine and no points, BUT if it happens on a regular basis, then Police have powers to have the offending vehicle removed, and then the costs mount up. Last tenant opposite was a suspect drugs dealer, and as road is narrow, I parked on non dropped kerb drive( front garden  turned into drive) to free up parking. Regularly I'd go out to find a "customer" parked outside. Some were a bit funny, till I mentioned that police were on way, as I'd like to go out, and a car ( reg xxx) was obstructing my passage.
