Changing glow plugs on a Yeti 110

Featured Replies

Having found two glow plugs with very high resistance on my Yeti 110 front wheel drive engine giving a reading off 1,853 ohms and 168.3 ohms will need to replace these as soon as possible.

Thought the Mrs starting up in the morning sounded very rough as she drove away in the morning for work.

Is there a specific brand to put in or can I order NGK Y1002A2 off the internet and will they be ok?

Also will I need a special very narrow box spanner or socket (what size?)  to get the glow plugs out after nearly 100,000 miles as there seems very little room compared with a standard petrol engine.

The other two measure 0.7 ohms each cylinder 1&2 by the way.

Has it HAD THE FIX..?

The fix is very unlikely to cause glow plugs to fail.

I think I used a deep 10mm socket to replace my glow plugs, I'd be surprised if your yeti was any different. Just make sure you use penetrating oil for a few hot/cold cycles before hand and don't exceed the undoing torque to minimise the risk of stripping the head :)

Our Yeti has not had the "Fix" As langers2k had stated as current heating up the plugs would not be effected by their software update on the engine for just two plugs.

We have received many phone calls and letters from Skoda concerning the free update but have learned over the years to leave it to somebody else to find the glitches and problems in new software.

IF all it does according to the company is change the settings when static to fool emission tests then why try out new software you cannot go back to the original and get worse results at MOT time?

Thanks again langers2k for all your knowledge that pointed me to the problems in question. Will order new glow plugs today on eBay. Had a hell of a job getting the plug and lead ends off as you seem to need the whole wire harness lifting up to have enough length of lead to actually get them out of the way. The leads just needed to be a few inches longer to solve the problem!

Four new Bosch DuraTerm glow plugs came this morning with the figures 0250403009  4.4V  719 from eBay for £42.50 including recorded delivery.

Having never played with diesel glow plugs before as always been a petrol head can you tell me if they actually operate in the engine at only 4.4 volts?

Have not seen the operating voltage before stated but interested as 4.4 V is stamped on them?

Anybody know what the operating voltage for the Yeti 110 engine is. Have I received the correct plugs.

Looked around on Google and there are lots of different makes for the Yeti but they all show 4.4 volts.

Thanks Urrell

Will not be trying one out on my PSU at 12 volts but dial the volts right down and not fry the glow plug.

Big assumption on my part thinking all runs at 12 volts straight from the battery. Learning slowly about diesel engines plus plugging in my new VCDS Ross-Tech box of tricks.

Then its back to petrol engines and a GS-911 interface for motorbike checks with the laptop connected for its annual pre winter service.

All four glow plugs came out after putting in some plus gas the previous day (as suggested by langers2K) with a torque figure of only 21 nm. Unscrewed ok with a 10mm box spanner as sockets to wide. Pulled out the plugs with a long 4 claw picking up tool I had from years ago when nuts were dropped down somewhere difficult to reach.

Cleaned out the holes and put in four new Bosch glow plugs at 17 nm again no problem.

Connected up the Ross-Tech VCDS, cable and door electrical faults now all clear and glow plug faults all clear.

The software package picked up problems I was not aware of and a quick repair went ahead. Nice one Ross-Tech.

By the way the new plugs measured in at 0.6 - 0.7 ohm running at 4.4 volts, where one was 1.8K ohms (no 3) The other one 168 ohms (no 4)

Explained why start up sounded like a blown big end some mornings.

Excellent, always nice when it goes to plan :)
