CCleaner hacked

Featured Replies

Just a heads up for anyone who uses CCleaner (aka Crap Cleaner).

HERE says v5.33 released recently contains something nasty.

Upgrading doesn't remove the relevant registry keys either.  If you use the software you might want to check what version you're on.

only 32bit editions effected.

You sure?

When I updated to 5.34 on my 64-bit W10 tablet the installer couldn't delete the previous 5.33 64-bit executable, and even logging in as "Super Administrator" I can't delete it either so I'm now running the 32-bit version of 5.34

Neither Malwarebytes nor Avast complain that the file is infected though, so going to try Sophos Virus Removal Tool now.

That's CCleaner out of business then

Been taken over by Avast recently anyway.

Oh dear..thankfully I never do prompt updates & am still on 5.26 64bit...

Not really .Reports from another site indicate that it's only a 32 bit version that had problems. I'm running a 64bit version ,and MacAfee scan shows no problems on the current version and the older versions I've still got on my PC. Sounds like the old problem- takes 1000 customers to give you a good reputation, and one bad one to wreck it.

i wouldn't trust Macafee to pick up s*** I routinely found it slowed my system and failed to spot items I knew to be there by manually checking - hell windows defender is considered better.

I had the 64-bit version and AVG quarantined it.

I think the installer has both 32 and 64 bit versions.

To be fair, the first task of an infection is to disable any security software you have to avoid detection.

Interesting that you knew you had an infection but trusted McAfee hadn't been compromised.
