Supercharged 1.6tdi, anyone done it?

Featured Replies

I am thinking on what to do next to the Elemontevrs power wise, as the power delivery has never suited my relaxed driving style, so I was looking at ways of moving the torque and/or boost further down the rev range, such as fitting a hybrid cr140 turbo, instead of the cr177 one it has at present.  Then I noticed the Mini Cooper SD I passed this afternoon and it has given me a notion for retrofitting a supercharger kit to the car, and have it operate A La the vRS, although  for a much shorter rev range.

Anyone done it is what I am trying to find out basically?

Cheers

I'm gonna say no one has done it, not in this country anyway.

a bigger turbo might not help much with low down torque unless you get a custom hybrid.

No, well that is why I was originally thinking of dropping the turbo down from the cr177 to a cr140 hybrid.  Spool quicker on one side and higher air input on the other, but the supercharger thing has caught my imagination now :).

Right now the boost doesn't come in until over 2000 revs, 70mph in 5th gear, with max torque at about 2500, which in 5th gear is 80mph, but I usually sit around 55-60 when I am commuting, and for jinking into the outside lane to overtake an upcoming truck I have to change down a gear to do so and, well to be perfectly honest, I am a lazy git.

I'd think the 140 hybrid will be your best bet, but the map will need adjusting and the power curve dropping down, it will currently have a high curve for standard clutch that's all.

Got this supercharger thing stuck in my bonce now.  Just because.

Good luck, let me know when you've decided it's not possible - not worth the funds. :D

The fitting should be straightforward enough, buy one, line up the pulleys, mount it, get belt from fenners, feed it air and plumb it to the intake.  The hard bit is controlling it.  Plus getting circa 250lbft from that low down again would be great!  Any mod is worth it if you want it!

The Mini Cooper SD is turbo charged.... also I get more torque than that on a stage 1

Yes I know the Mini SD is turbo charged, but it was the S that got me thinking.  I had a used retrofit supercharger kit fitted to my wifes old Swift sport, and whilst it wasn't sluggish before, the transformation to having full beans from that low rev point was great.  The fuel bill wasn't though ;)

I am not after huge torque or bhp gains, at the moment it chucks out about 175bhp and over 250lbft of torque, and if you drive it more like a petrol turbo style keeping the revs higher, it is brilliant, but I want to move the torque band back down the rev range.  My original plan was to remove the cr177 turbo and fit a cr140 hybrid turbo - unbolt, rebolt, remap, job done.  That just seems a bit too straightforward and has been done a million times, so I want to do it a wee bit differently, and having the 250lbft from 1000revs sounds lovely to me :)

Modding is fun but is it really worth it. I paid £300 for a map and honestly it is alot more responsive and pulls harder now. I think you should start there. get a map from More-BHP, Shark or other known companies who custom make maps and not these low end ones who just buy a generic map for your car...

He’s already got a cr177 and a map :D

if you do take off the 177 let me know how much you want for it.

Once I have 'exhausted' (see what I did there!) my options on the supercharger route, I will return to plan Y and turn the turbo size down a notch. Unless something major breaks on the car and I return to plan G, which involved chucking a 2.0cr engine in it, but the damned thing doesn't go wrong!

Now the 2.0 conversion I would be interested in

?

Is this the Fabia Estate that Brimma modified & Tuned to be a Fabia Mk2 vRS look-a-like, and to have similar or better performance than a Twincharger?

Surely someone has done this already.  I would have thought this would have been about the most obvious route if, for example, the chocolate e189 engine let's go.

Yup

That be it.

So what have you done with it since that it is still not giving enough go go?

Nah it has plenty of go like.  Brimma achieved the aim of a diesel vRS, but the big turbo means a bit of lag which I am just trying to be inventive in moving the boost and torque about 500 revs south.

Do the 1.4 tai engines use the same engine block as the 1.6 tdi? I’m looking into supercharging my Fabia too

Plan B:- buy one of these electric turbo/superchargers  that used to appear on ebay, at  £15 a proper bargain - not!  Maybe that seller has sold them all or had them all returned and stuffed up his ??? !

How good it would be if the 1,390cc 1.4TSI Twinchargers used the block, and internals from the 1,598cc Diesel.

No more issues with the crap pistons / rings / scrappers that were used.

I know it's been like 8 years and no one probably cares anymore, but did you ever get anywhere with this?

I have a 1.6TDI and i'm proper curious... :D
