Trying to troubleshoot MAF in VCDS

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have a 2008 BXE engined Octavia 1.9TDI with about 72k miles on it. Has been in regular 400 mile per week use until a few weeks ago when I cleaned it and put in the garage as I wanted to sort a few things ahead of MOT. On MOT day I started the car and the amber check engine light came on. I saw it was a P0102 MAF related code, cleared it quickly outside the MOT station and it passed no issues (phew!). The car seems to drive OK, however, the light keeps coming back on. Stuff I've tried:

1. Removing and cleaning the stock MAF with lots of electrical switch cleaner - no improvement

2. Swapping in another used MAF off a scrap car - I know, money's tight at the moment so I won't buy a new OEM one unless I really have to. Initially I thought it seemed better but the CE Light came back quickly.

3. Checking wiring from the MAF connector back. There was some pretty nasty looking black electrical tape wound around the area where that part of the loom branches off into another electronic box with lots of little rubber tubes on it and back into the main loom, presumably. I unwound it a little to take a look and cannot see any breaks there, no idea if it would have left the factory like that, pretty poor if so. For background, my Granddad had the car from near new before me and it was serviced by Skoda and then a known trusted mechanic, no way he'd have bodged it like that if there was an issue, so it seems odd. There's almost no clearance as it's right at the back of the engine/bay to really investigate this wiring. I can't imagine why anybody would mess with this wiring. The only thing I can think is that the car had a refurb turbo fitted about 4 months and probably 5000 miles ago, maybe the garage that did that work knocked the wiring. The car was fine all the way around France for our holiday!

4. Running it without the MAF connected at all. This seems to make no difference again i.e. the CEL comes on again.

5. Hooking it up to VCDS and trying to get a proper read on what's going on. This is with the replacement, 2nd hand MAF in there. Here's the part where I could really use some advice please. I don't know how to interpret what's going on, is the car not 'seeing' the MAF at all, in which case I guess it must be wiring I assume, or is the replacement MAF as bad as the first? Some screen grabs are below.

Thank you to anybody who can help.

Cheers

Chris

Hi, yes both have Bosch 0 281 002 531 / VW 038 906 461B printed on the body.

I'd be looking at the wiring then

Thanks, I think the wiring is OK though. I have now noticed that EGR is incomplete or failed according to VCDS again, so I guess I'll be pulling my EGR valve out this weekend and cleaning it up...

Yeh egr would throw those faults too

Closing this off for the benefit of any future people with this issue - it was the £$%*ing fuse of all things! It was killing the 12v feed.
