Head gasket failure?

Featured Replies

Hi there,

Fabia 1.4mpi 2001. Coolant leak somewhere. Im pretty sure, its head gasket. Yellowish stuff under oil and also coolant cap. I removed oil cap when engine running and a lot steam came out. Its not short cold trip condensation problem.

Oil level OK, coolant fluid pretty clean. No white smoke.

Car mileage is 260K. Worth to repair head gasket? Is it hard to DIY?

I added few pics too.

Yes, very likely to be HGF, not an expensive or difficult job so your call as to whether it's worth it or not, bear in mind you can just buy another one for a few hundred quid, they're not exactly endangered.

Ok. Is there somewhere a video, how to do it? I understand the basics, but tutorial would be good.

Hmmm, well it's very basic but if you haven't a clue you probably shouldn't try.

get a garage to do it then. Yes you could buy another car for not much but if yours is perfectly fine other than this issue why risk another banger which might have other issues

There are probably a number of youtube videos, or the Haynes manual will surely be adequate.

If you're lucky TMB or another 1.4 MPI owner will be a long soon to be more specifically helpful.

The original gaskets had a problem & VAG modified it & there is a way to tell...not a difficult job on that engine, much easier than other engines..

Thanks a lot. I will reply if any updates...

The modified gaskets have TEMAC in red letters on the front right-hand corner of the gasket.

Don't adjust the valve clearances just for a gasket change - they are hydraulic lifters and only need adjusting if the valve gear has been overhauled.

If you luck at downloads over you can download the manual for this engine.

You don't have to take away the manifolds! Just push it backwards ... Easy job, but cheek the cylinder height se manuals. remember to unscrew the head bolts the opposite way than tighten. From each end successive.
