MK2 GTI Golf

Featured Replies

I used to have a MK2 1.6 Driver. Recently i have recessed to childhood, and will do anything to get a MK2 GTI 8V.

I have started having a look through autotrader, and it seems that GTI golfs are fetching about twice as much in Northern Ireland as England. Dealers here even bring them in, 3 or 4 at a time and sell them on!!

I was thinking about spending up to

I think she'll get the better end of that deal. Someone here had a GTi but ditched it because it kept breaking.

Childhood dreams are rarely matched by reality. test drive one and see what it feels like compared to the rock solid, reliable, comfy, quiet, fast Octavia ;)

Mk2 golfs are great, i had one at the same time a my octy vRS. totally different cars tbh. both have good and bad points. with a mk2 golf be prepared to spend a bit to get it to a good point of repair, after that normal servicing etc and odd part replacement will be all you should get hit with.

they are reliable cars so once cared for they will run well, just be prepared for expense at the start.

£1000 for a mk2 of that age is cheap, to get a really good one even on mainland uk you would be looking at nearer the £2k mark

I get this mag delivered monthly, great source of Info and a fairly big classified section, usually enthusiast owned sales too not your Lax power sh!te

EDIT:

Also remembered Jim at Starperformance was trying to get rid of a Thruxton big bore 16v in tornado red for not alot of money, one of the guys at Seat Enthusiasts was interested but I'm not sure if he got it. www.starperformance.co.uk :o

I have a 5 door GTI 1986 8v - but silly low miles at 101k, fully documented and service stamped etc.

There a few niggly problems though, and I intend to get it up to a high standard with 12 months tax and test before selling it (already have lots of parts to do the repairs).

I live in Cambs, but don't mind a drive to Wales ;) Its road legal at the moment and would take a silly low offer for it as is.

If you want more info, feel free to PM me, or I may start a "For Sale" thread.

MOT & tax expire end of April.

Trouble is at that money the people who bought and cared for them new invariably don't own them anymore and the boy racers have had them. Stick with the Octy.

Never meet your idols, it's invariably a comedown :thumbdwn:

i wouldnt say too many boy racers own mk2's a good percentage are owned by good sensible owners :)

Like mine - Grandad owned it from new, and I've only done 400 odd miles in it so far... :thumbdwn:

Only the one...

It needs a good wash and polish and wax, especially the wheels.

Just need to fit all the parts I have to get it up to the best original standard.

When I'm ready to sell, including what I have fitted in the past 3 months, it will have...

  • 102k miles, fully stamped up to 60k, then maintained by my grandad, then by me.
  • New clutch
  • New battery
  • Professionally fitted imobiliser with certificate
  • CV boot
  • New front wishbone bushes
  • Cambelt, full service.
  • New air filter housing
  • New gear linkage bushes and golf ball selector thing
  • Remote central locking (aftermarket kit)
  • New parcel shelf
  • PAS (to be fitted soon)
  • New heater matrix and heater fan resistor pack.
  • New multi-function stalk.

Other than that, its a 1.8 8v, black, 5 door, small bumper 5 speed, totally original car with 12 months tax and 12 months MOT. And absolutely NO faults whatsoever bar a couple of trolley dings in the doors, which may be removed prior to sale.

Will probably be after around

Sounds good mate, take it the bodyworks sound? Could well be interested once its up to that spec and at that sort of price, however, wouldn't blame you if you did use it as your daily driver after all that effort

Indeed.

The body work is in lovely condition really. No rust anywhere. It does however have a few dings (from car doors opening onto it), and a small area on the back wing where the laquer has gone. This will all be sorted by chipsaway and dentsaway.

I'm really enjoying getting it up to scratch tbh. The thing is knowing when to stop...

Just been out for a drive in it, and found another little problem - the drivers seat base is a bugger to "lock" in. May dismantle it, give it all a good clean and a lube up...

May hire a carpet shampooer too at the weekend as 18 months with no heater has taken its toll on the interior.

Ah well, getting there.

BACK ON TOPIC!

Heres a pic on the day I bought it home from my Grandads... It had been standing for 12 months without being washed or anything. Will be nice to treat it to some Swissol...

Still on its original plates too...

Looks lovely mate. I had a similar seat problem on my old 86 plate Polo, what you suggest did the job for my seat !!!

You don't want to be selling that, get it back up to, as near as dam it, original standard and enjoy mate, and enjoy !!!!!!!!!!!

Be interested to know how you get on, why don't you start a project journal on it, keep us all up to date?

I will possibly be looking a 3dr. Its something i plan on keeping in a shed and working on from time to time. I may not even have it on the road for a year or two.

I have been toying with the idea, but it's the sort of car which will never lose value (the opposite in fact).

Although to be honest, i don't think i would sell it on if i got a nice clean one. Just keep it at home and gradually do it up to the point that its back to showroom condition.

JD

Missed one on Fleabay...20K miles from New...........
