The Familiar Door Fail

Featured Replies

My rear nearside door lock has failed completely. I can't open the door from inside or out. Fairly sure it is a mechanical failure as I can hear the lock making some noise on using the central locking (it also had started making a farting noise which I foolishly ignored).

Given that the door card cannot be removed without accessing screws around its edge - how on earth do I get to the lock to either soak in anti seize spray or destroy with a drill?! My current line of thinking is that my only hope is to ruin the door card to get to the lock. Is there a more delicate or precision way of either removing the door card or releasing the lock mechanism?

MOT due in November.....

Have you tried pulling the inside door handle and unlocking (with remote key or from drivers door) at the same time?

I'm sure I must have tried this at some point - but I will give it another go today as it's worth a try. Any magic words I can utter?!

Open sesame? Failing that try some more colourful language. :D

my back door dead locked. there is some threads with help on it. basically i removed all the torx screws around the door card i had access to. then iirc i forced the door card off.can cause damage but think mostly it will just break a couple of the cheap to replace plastic clips inside the door card so some spares before you start is a good idea. then i had to brake the plastic cover off the lock mech...until i had room to get my fingers inside. once i could i had to fiddle around until i manually moved the mechanism that opens your door  sounds like mission impossible...did cost me some skin a few times aswell but you feel like McGuyver when you get it open:D good while ago i did it so would wait for another reply or 2 to confirm this or try find the threads with more detail on the process. defo been done but a bunch of members on here i reckon

best of luck

Hi Dan,

Did you get this door problem sorted? The reason I ask is I've got the same problem and it's an MOT failure so I would be interested in a solution.

Hi guy's,

Solved my problem for the moment due to a stroke of good fortune. Problem was I couldn't get the door open so wasn't able to remove the torx screws and get the door car off (as huwants2no). I just kept locking and unlocking and sometimes pulling the door latch handle and after about 20 attempts the door opened. As the MOT is approaching I've adopted a temporary solution. With the door unlocked and open I disconnect the cable connection at the B post. This means the door is permanently unlocked but at least I can now put the car in for an MOT. They will fail the car if the door will not open but as far as I know I don't think they will fail it for not locking as that is a security issue not a safety issue. This buys me a bit of time to get a replacement lock.

Glad fo hear you had some luck. As regarding getting the door card off, like i waz saying above, it can be done without  causing damage beyond a couple of 39pence plastic clips in the doorcard. Mine was same az yours and as you cant open the door you only get access to some of  the torx screws, not all. But you still get the doorcard off this way, and then you have access to the lock, which can be broken open and you continue az i said above. It was tricky tho and x frustrating and awkward so glad you were lucky enough to be able to unlock the door

Mine was completely dead locked and i had tried all kinds to open it to no avail! Iirc i picked up a lock at the breakers yard and replaced

Glad you got lucky.

I have been delaying this.......but I plan to have a go as huwants2no suggests. Will update hopefully after resolving!

Thanks for advice from all. I removed the card as advised maybe damaging a few clips. I've attached an image of where in the casing you need to drill to expose the cog to turn to unlock. I assume this cog is normally driven by a motor when you click the central locking. Anyway it worked and opened the door.

One question. How did people attach the long arm to the casing? It's like it's too long and you have to put a lot of force and bend it to feed the new mechanism in.

Got the arm back in by applying what felt like a bit too much force :D

Nice! Not just me then. On first try the new mechanism would not unlock as I think the arm was putting resistance to the point the small unlocking pivot could not move sufficiently. I guess it will pass MOT not locking so will have another bash after it passes. Bored of locks now..... Thanks again.
