Fabia rear brake caliper bleed nipples seized.

Featured Replies

Fabia MK1 Vrs been in for a service at a Skoda dealer and brake fluid change, they couldn't do the brake fluid change as both rear brake caliper bleed nipples are seized and they say it will need new rear caliper at £250 each, they also mention the near side rear brake caliper lever is sticking, but at the moment it's not crucial. Reading information on google searches, the seized nipples can be undone by soaking with penetrating fluid.

Is someone trying to pull a fast one, or will both rear brake caliper require replacing?

It's unlikely they seized so tight they can't be removed in the time between services.

So I'd say they're not trying hard enough, get some fluid on there and see if you can coax them off.

What they're saying is that they won't risk snapping the nipples off unless you've agreed to pay for new calipers already.

Grangers penetrating fluid...soak it for a few days, & put cloths under to catch the drips...otherwise you'll ruin the alloys..

The handbrake lever arm does stick, could be the inner seal, or usually the internal return spring...the fix is to use the external helper springs which fit in the holes & notch's...the springs are either from a VW T4 van or the B6 Passat one set is stronger than the other...Did this to my AUB engines Fabia as it had the rear discs...

I suppose this is where replacing the fluid every 2 years helps a bit, also, I tend to try to slowly chip away as much rust scale as possible at the bleed points then use release fluid, note here that WD-40 is not a release fluid of the kind needed here. Finally, for some time I've taken the view that I is worth while replacing these bleed nipples every 6 or 8 years as they can end up being overtightened which messes up the cone area that is meant to seal into the calliper.

At a main dealership and elsewhere time is money - your money, at main dealership that will be £100+ an hour, by the time they was tried and failed and snapped the bleed valve, followed by drilling out and retapping these holes and hopefully finding suitable new bleed valves in their store, you might find that cost per side a bit much to swallow.

Now, if you did these jobs yourself, hopefully you would have replaced the fluid every 2 years so maybe they would have come out okay, if not ECP etc sell either new TRW callipers or refurb'd ones a lot cheaper than Skoda etc.

I apply Copper grease to all my bleed nipple threads. They usually undo just fine.
