Want Factory DRLs run with low beam

Recommended Posts

Greetings everyone.

Owner of 2011 Octavia TDI seeking help.

I'm trying to make my factory led DRLs run all the time , even when I manually turn light switch full right ( low beam on ) I want them to stay on. At the moment I made my low beam run all the time so at the daytime I have them both on but as soon as it gets dark or I turn the switch full right way , my low beam xenons come on and DRLs turn completely off. I read other have them dimm or stay on , but my go full off. Greetings , forgive typing errors if you come across any.

If you mean those lights under side mirrors which light up when I unlock the car , yes I do and one just burned out 5 days ago :D . I own vcds and cable so I could post auto scan maybe 3 hours from now or so .I have spent around 5 hours trying make working combination in VCDS but seem unable... Thanks for reply

The ones under the mirrors are puddle lights :)

The sidelights are in the headlights above the low beams and indicator, normally a W5W bulb.

It looks like yours are on but they aren't normally fitted to a vRS, at least on the UK spec.

Ofc they arent working all the time , when car is off :D ...It lights up when I turn switch to parking lights or when it gets dark and car turns lights on automatically. I bought this car new so I'm only owner and it hasnt anything done to it pretty sure about that. I'll post auto scan in few minutes

The spec in Bosnia must be different to the UK.

You could also look to see how many wires attach to the rear of the LED DRL.

If it's 3 wires then it should be possible, if it's only 2 wires then I doubt it'll support dimming for use as sidelights :)

Are you sure that's a vRS?

Your profile claims it is but:

- The engine code is CFHC which is 140ps, a vRS TDi should be 170ps.

- The instrument cluster is also a non-vRS part number.

Based on that scan and the sidelight behaviour, it appears to be a normal Octavia that's had a vRS bumper and lighting fitted.

If that is the case, you'll need to do some extra wiring and the recode the BCM lighting configuration with VCP/ODIS (not VCDS) to get the correct vRS behaviour.

Yes its 140HP model ( remapped to 185HP ) and full vrs optic from factory.

I dont want to dimm , adjust brightness of my DRLs , I wonder if there is command to make them permanently on/off . So no matter full bright or dimmed ,  just want them on with low beams at night.

They are too bright to be used at night... They need to be dimmed to avoid causing glare to other road users.

Assuming you've just reused the existing DRL wiring, it is possible to have them on permanently but you'll need VCP/ODIS.

As far as I'm aware, VCDS won't be able to make the change needed.

Ahh...that pulled trigger for me getting vcds ... I guess I'll looking around for other tweaks to make use of it... Thanks for your time , you are very nice person to seek help from. :)

I see the option but not sure how to use it , if it even matters.

As far as I know you can modify the entry box right after Dec1: to set the percentage of the dimming. In my config it's 92x1=92, but Bit7 is unchecked, since I don't use DRL as position light.

Have you also checked Byte27, Bit2? I'm not sure, but I think this is also neccessary for drl if you want it active with low beam.

  • 7 months later...

Howdy folks,

My apologies for unearthing an old thread. I'm having a similar issue to the above. My DRLs are running all the time lights on or off. Dim when I turn on the lights etc. Not an issue.

I bought a set of W5W LED's for mine. These bulbs don't work at all, never did. Put the new ones in and no joy either. The guy I bought it from said it was because the DRLs are on the car. I've seen the online with both working. The w5w's have wiring at the back of them. I was flicking through the thread and you's have some depth of knowledge RE: the software system on them.

I am wondering if I could get the w5w s bulbs to light up when I turn the switch on to the RHS of the steering wheel and keep the drl settings as they are. Can this be done? I would like to get them all running together if at all possible?

@briVRS - As you have a vRS, you'll probably find there isn't a wire from the BCM to sidelights to power them.

There will be wiring inside the headlight as they are the same headlight as non-vRS models.

So it's not a runner then?

Is it a big job to connect them up and get them running without jeopardising any electrical components in the car?

Most people on here have European/UK spec cars where EU regulations require the daytime driving lights must go off when the dip or main beams are on. What are the rules in Bosnia?

It depends if you want to do it properly :)

Depending on which BCM is fitted, you might have 2 spare pins that can power sidelights. If you do, you'll need to run a wire to each headunit and find someone to reprogram the lighting configuration to turn them on (not possible with VCDS).

You might be able to tap into an existing lighting circuit depending what behaviour you want but I wouldn't advise it...

I only know the Hungarian regulations which should correspond to the EU and probably to the Bosnian regulations. It says, that only one pair of parking/side light may lit on the front of the car. The dimmed DRL is legally used as park/side light, so if it's active, then the regular w5w lights must not work.

Based on this I suppose, that it is not possible to activate DRL as park/side light along with the w5w bulbs using VCDS.

But there might be an illegal solution: you should try to reconfigure the front park/side light configuration with VAG can pro. I think if you set the w5w bulbs as DRL instead of park/side light, then the will lit along with the led DRL.

At least I've done this mod with my rear park/side light, and now they work as DRL.

Thanks for getting back to me. How would I find out the type of bcm? I'd like it done properly. Do you know how to do it?

An autoscan with VCDS or similar would give you the part number for the BCM.

Otherwise, you could check the sticker on the unit, it should be a roughly 6" square black box above the pedals in the drivers footwell, it'll have 3 large connectors (black, white, gold/brown).

I can reprogram the lighting configuration but I'd need access to the BCM which could be tricky with you being based in Ireland.
