Emergency Brake / Stop on uphill junction

Featured Replies

Ok so doing my normal left turn 30 seconds after leaving house on side road uphill junction, then on main road i spotted car coming from the right NO HEADLIGHTS ON on so i slammed the brake with left foot (probably a bit too much)

The car held itself on my part of the junctrion then would'nt budge at all, tried pressing the brake pedal to release - nothing. D - nothing, turned engine off back on still not moving!

So had to put in neutral, coast backwards, heard a few grinding noises then slowly managed to get round the bend (manully put hazards on myself at this point) as it still felt like i was anchored back somehow! once i got on the main road on the flat car was back to normal. For info my brake assist in VCDC is set to 'calm'

Was this some sort of emergency function?

As you slammed them on, I guess the brake assist system cut in too, applying more braking force to the wheels. I surmise that as you left footed it, you may have still been on the gas too, to some degree? You may have jammed the brakes on and basically not allowed the system to reset itself. Sounds like a similar kind of jamming that settles can and often do, where they become locked and are tricky to operate again but will revert after a few tries. As long as all seems well and the car drives and stops safely with no lights/noises etc ,I would then try a proper, safe emergency stop on a quiet, flat peice of road to check the system is functioning normally. Try it a half a dozen times and if all goes well, forget about it but if it happens again or if any warning lights or untoward sounds happen, take it sharpish (But safely) To your local dealership for an expert check. Cant be too safe with brakes! The left foot, BTW, is a very clumsy way to brake as most people are used to pushing down the clutch and will brake far too hard with it so the emergency situation was most likely greatly exacerbated!

good advice i recently switched to left foot braking only a month ago. So maybe i was still on the accelerator with the right, Will try a few emergency stops one day (right foot)  next time in near industrial estate!

Touching the brake cuts power, why left foot braking can be hopeless with a DSG and some offer revised software to change that..

Then as well as Brake assist you can have the DSG Brain Fart and a locked DSG. Read the Owners Manual on what to do if the DSG does get locked.
