Head Lamp & Control Unit Repair

Featured Replies

My drivers side Xenon headlight has stopped working - on taking it to the local garage they said the issue was a little too specialised and I'd need to take it for repair at the local Skoda.

On popping it in today, it appears the headlight has stopped working due to water ingress and that water ingress has travelled down to the control unit that will also need replacing.

The quoted price for the repair is... £1240 (give or take a couple of quid).

Is the issue of water ingress to the headlight (which i thought would be around £130 at most to replace) and the affected control unit reflective in the cost? Needless to say it's going to be a rather painful bill...

Anyone else had this problem?

One or two others have had issues with water ingress on the bottom control module on the Superb.

I think the common solution is to clean up any corrosion and then replace the control module with a good second hand one.

I don't know how the water gets in but you might be able to prevent it by adding silicone grease to the connectors.

Thanks, thus far the break down of the quote is as follows:

Control unit - £271.45

Headlamp - £517.51

Ballast (control unit #2) - £271.45

Labour - £177.60

The confusion is really why there is the need for 2 control units. Needless to say the proposed bill is really rather high. In terms of WHY the water ingress has occured, i got bumped by a microcar earlier in the year, so im guessing that has caused water to seep into that space over the last 8 months or so (so i'll just need to ensure that is sorted with some bodywork repair and silicone grease to ensure it hopefully doesn't happen again).

Any further thoughts anyone?

Scan it with VCDS and see what controllers are reporting faults.

There are two control units on the headlight for your car.

One converts 12 volts to lots of volts for the xenon lamp, the other controls the motors to change where the projector points.

I've no idea if both have been damaged but it wouldn't surprise me if they are replacing both as a matter of course.

hey OP, did you get Skoda to fix this? I have the same issue with water ingress into the headlamp unit and that in turn has caused the ballast to fry, but damaged little else. I was able to replace the ballast unit underneath the light for about 40GPB and a good few hours figuring how to take the front of the car off (I made a video, whihc i may post to youtube at some point). So, I have diagnosed and fixed the symptom, but have not yet figured out how the water got in there in the first place and I want to fix this aspect of it before I shut everything up again. I have taken off the headlamp unit but it's totally sealed as far as I can see and one cannot protect the ballast connector in any practical way against further ingress (should it occur again) as far as I can see. How did your repair go? Have you ever noticed condensation or moisture inside the headlights after the repair?

it's very hard to dislodge. I ended up using a flathead screwdriver to lever it out.
