Service indicator urgency

Featured Replies

Hi,

Last week, my Octavia II vRS (probably mapped) started the service indicator countdown at 1400. On Saturday morning, it jumped from 1200 down to 0 in one step. I've heard it said that obeying the service indicator is more important on vehicles that have had "work" done on them. I checked the oil and it was a little low, down to 1/4 above min. I've topped it up to mnearly max with fresh oil until my dealer can fit it in (about 2 weeks)

I'm supposed to be driving to Scotland on Thursday. With the 1200 miles that the service indicator said before it hit the floor, I could have done it comfortably with at least 300 miles left over.

I'm thinking I may hire a car for the Scotland trip if it's not a good idea to put those miles on with the service indicator on. What would your advice be please?

Thank you,

Paul.

So what oil was put in at the last oil and filter change, was it Long Life Oil.?  Is the Indicator on Fixed Servicing?  9,400 miles / 372 days.

How many miles covered since the Oil & Filter change and how has it been driven, careful or Track Days and lots of spirited driving?

If you own the car, and have no warranty then do what you want, if the oil change is not going to matter if done at 10,000 miles or so do not bother,

if you are at 18,000 miles with long life oil in then think on getting that changed ASAP.

PS

If the car is maybe mapped, maybe think on using 5w 40 Full Synthetic Oil to VW 502 00 at the next service, go Fixed Servicing

and check your Oil Level a bit more often, low oil means hotter oil, longer to get cool, oil consumption rises etc.

1.8 & 2.0 TSI Euro 5's need looking after as do 1.2 & 1.4 TSI's.

?

PPS,

Why use a Dealership, use an Independent to change the Oil & Filter,

or maybe buy a Vacuum Pump to take the Oil out the Dipstick tube,

then change the filter and even replace the sump plug if you want to  be sure you have all the oil out.

The car is on variable servicing and was last oil changed at a full service last summer. It's got Castrol Edge 5W30 LL in it.

Most driving is round town and (reasonably quick) motorway driving. Done something in the 8-10k miles range this year.

Car is an 07 so had an Euro 4 2.0 TFSI

Sounds like the service indicator was left on Fixed Servicing then, 9,400 miles / 372 days, not on Variable,

or something up like the low oil.

You should be fine now with the oil at the correct level, what have you added, and what did the last Service Invoice show was used?

Only go over the 10,000 miles or so if the Long Life Oil was used last time. so 5w 30 FS LL to VW504 00

Not that the engine will die at 12,000 miles because it was not Long Life oil, but then having low oil was not 'Simply Clever',

so the non Long Life oil if in can have a shorter life as a good lubricant and coolant.  5w 40 FS VW502 00.

An extra thousand miles isn't going to cause sudden death to your engine.  Especially if you just drive normally  rather than like a bellend.
