broken parts in clutch on diaphragm spring

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I would like to ask you, because I don't know the reason why happened this.
Some steel parts of the clutch exactly at the trust plate diaphragm spring in my car is broken. You can see it on the picture.

It seems to be the ring with the broken plates (lamellas) not in center.
What can be the cause of this?
The mileage is 187000km.
What do you think about it?

Common issue if you do a search, lucky you caught it unless you where unaware that something had happened and just changing the clutch due to wear because it can wear the gearbox casing away loosing the oil.

milage you’ve done it as done well. some folk haven’t been as lucky and costing a lot due to the gearbox casing etc needing replaced

I the flying steel parts caused a small 3 x 2mm slot on the house of gearbox side which common with clutch.
I noticed some oil leaking, a small oil spill under the car.
I went to the service center, maybe should replace some seal, but I surprised when show me the what is the result of the small leaking.

This is a known fault with Sachs clutches on various Skoda models. Skoda have offered warranty coverage on affected models but you will probably need to fight for it. There's a lot of information about the problem in this thread:

That was like mine but without the hole.

you can get second hand boxes cheap or liquid metal it :) . i changed a DMF on a 306 hdi and that had the stops broken off and was causing the whole assembly to wind out the spring and start rubbing the housing like this

What does it means " or liquid metal it " ?

It’s basically just like body filler

you mix the 2 parts ( well last time I used some years ago) but sets like metal

It's been a very  very long while since I used such a product, biggest issue is the joined surfaces need to be spotless (with no traces of oil!)

Possible modern day examples:-

I will buy one, and try it.

Thank you

Before you go doing any repairs, talk to Skoda. They are supposed to replace all damaged parts under warranty, including the damaged gearbox casing.

My car was at first in the official Skoda service center, unfortunately this damage not covered by warranty, the offered repair price was in GBP 2443  (about 855000 HUF)

I paid the disassembly and assembly and transported my car on trailer to home, I will transport it, to a cheaper car service station on the next week.

:-(

Skoda have issued a service bulletin to their dealers about this. The details are in the thread I linked to above. If the dealer refuses to honour the warranty you should phone the Skoda head office in your country about it.

In spite of the fact that, my car is 7 years old, the mileage is 187000km?

Exactly where is in the above link the mentioned service bulletin?

i used JB weld on my 6 speed where the rubbish cast filler port of the gearbox was cracked after tightening a small hair line crack appeared, so i filed a v along the crack,  then used brake cleaner to remove all the oily residue and has not leaked a drop since then. the alluminium on my 02m box is horrible, threads pull out of cast like butter, thankfully recoils are cheap. but anyway i got it from a scrap dealer for 100 bucks with transfer box.

Loctite metal-set is what I would recommend. We use it at work for patching pipes and its good stuff.

PS Don't forget to replace the concentric clutch slave cylinder visible in the pictures - They have been known to fail and it may have been damaged with the clutch pressure plate failure. Easy to change now with the gearbox off.
