Coil pack will give you no codes.

don't think it has a pack. did spark plugs the other day and has the ones that go with straight onto to plugs

It has four coil packs, only one will be duff. Start the car and disco the packs one at a time, when you disco one and it makes no difference you've found the duffer.

Ok I’ll try but car doesn’t stay running for long plus if one was dead surely car would run just with a miss fire? Open to trying anything at mo as putting in a garage is gonna cost more then it’s worth I reckon

Check the brake servo hose hasn't cracked and come adrift, or partly so. The hose joints either side of the non-return valve are favourites for trouble.

Were these done in an attempt to solve a problem, if so was it a less drastic version of your current trouble, or something else?

I wonder if the cam timing is out, just spotted that the cambelt's recently been done.

Yes all work done was because of a problem. Car started and ticked over fine but would take a life time to get up to speed to change gear. Did all the work and it’s made it worse.

will look at any suggested ideas over the next couple of days before the dreaded garage call.

Been googling it and it sounds like a throttle body problem, but surely if the thing was faulty it would throw a code up?

You're not guaranteed a code for any problem and when you get a code it isn't guaranteed to be the part that the code represents. Many times a code is just a symptom of the problem, only there to clue you in on where to look for the cause.

Did you do what @sepulchrave suggested? Also, it's a good idea to check for vacuum leaks.

Do you have VCDS or an OBD2 scanner? Watching your live data while it idles could give you something to go on. Otherwise, in all fairness, you're just guessing at the problem. To be fair you've already blown too much cash on nothing.

The reason I mentioned the coil packs was because the HT side of the system is not under ECU control and therefore no codes will be thrown unless there's a pronounced misfire which can be 'heard' by the knock sensor.

I agree that it's very unusual to find such a major issue that doesn't give any codes, any problem with the throttle body certainly would.

You usually get a cam sensor code if the timing is out, however, on the 1.4 DOHC engine only the inlet cam is checked and because it has two cambelts it's perfectly possible to have that cam correctly timed to the crank and the exhaust cam incorrectly timed without throwing any codes, this would result in a significant loss of power.

I suggest you get the garage to perform a compression and leakdown test and double check the cam timing.

Thx for all the info. This Saturday I plan on checking all that’s been mentioned and will get back to you all with the out come.

I’m also using vcds and as for live readings the thing won’t stay started long enough to check them

In the meantime, try connecting to module 17 (Instruments) and see if there's a fault code about something in there.  For some reason the Auto HVAC module thinks there's a problem to be found there.
