Stripped caliper bolt

Featured Replies

Hi,

My OSF brake caliper bolt has stripped out the thread in the bracket. It appears on this car the bracket isn't a separate piece, its part of the hub. So it's not a quick swap out for a scrapper part.

I was debating about getting a helicoil kit to repair it but without taking the whole thing off I don't think I can get to the hole from the inner 'bolt' side. The question is can I tap it from the back which is easily accessible, or will this result in a reverse thread, I can't get my head around the geometry!I know I'll need to thread the helicoil from the inner and I think I can manage that. It's the tapping a decent thread from the outside that's a concern.

Anyone had to do this? Any thoughts or advice would be welcome.

Either way through will give the same thread.

I thought it would, good to get some confirmation thanks.

My usual advice is if you’re not confident take it to any engineers to get the work done. Getting the angle off could lead to more problems if you don’t get it right. Maybe easier and cheaper just to replace it.

I had mine done at 60k , at a local small machine shop. Done on the car( from gearbox side) and it didn't cost much / take long. Now at 90K with an extra pad change and no problems refitting caliper.

I do them on the car, absolute piece of cake and much stronger than the original thread, grease the caliper bolt before refitting so the helicoil insert doesn't come out with it next time it's undone.

Must admit, the place  I went to had no problems, but they did say it's common to certain types of front hub.
