Vrs mk3 tdi Overheated

Hey guys First time poster here! 

 

I have a mk3 vrs on a 14 plate 23000 miles. Got the dreaded overheated warning today while traveling around 70mph pulled over into a layby to have a look. 

Popped the bonnet and no visual problems leaks, low coolant, fan not kicking in ect. AA was called and arrived in around 45 mins in this time i had restarted the car and left it idiling for around 10 mins and it sat at 90 degrees on the dot like nothing had happened! 

Also sat googling to find many threads about the Dreaded waterpump failure   AA man turns up and cant find an issue at all  and Ive drove her Home without an issue? was around a 30 mile trip. 

 

So the question is does this sound like the waterpump problem? and is there any chance at all if it is of getting it free/discounted price?

Unfortunately it sounds like a possibility. I take it yours is out of warranty? Contact your local Skoda dealership and report it as a "Known Fault" and expect at least a discount or the work done for free.

Yep water pump is intermittent to start, expect at least 50% from Skoda & although, your mileage is low, at your expense get the cambelt changed, there should be minimal labiur charge for this to be done at the same time

Yep, definately water pump....

Be prepared for a battle with the dealer & Skoda Uk but many have managed at least 50% contribution to the costs out of warrenty.

 

Don't let them fob you off that they have never heard about this issue.

The sticky impeller with the old design pump is well known & becoming pretty common on older TDIs at the moment...

Cheers Guys, just spoken to my local dealer in Derby and the car is booked in for 8am on Thursday for a full check, shes told me this is a cost of £82 but to discuss about it being a known fault ect on the day with the service department. So if it does flag up as the waterpump failure heres hoping we can get at least the 50% discount! Cheers Josh

One of the problems is dealers don't get the full hourly payment from Skoda for warranty work.  I think this is why warranty claims get rejected, I don't think they even involve Skoda they just make the desision themselves.  Good luck on getting discount, they will do there hardest to wriggle out of it.

Just spoken to a mechanic whos a family friend and owes me a small favour and hes said he would do the water pump and cambelt for £300 including parts. Im starting to think this is a no brainer and saves all the hassle having to drop the car at skoda for the day getting charged £82 ect. And even if the waterpump gets replaced for free I would still be looking around £150+ to have the cambelt done? My brother has vcds so we will be plugging it in later to see what pops up.

Just a Quick one guys, does the vrs have 2 waterpumps an electronic one and a mechanical one? If so which one is to be replaced?  Cheers Josh
