Started by sending my 1992 Porsche 968 off to Williams Crawford, a Porsche specialist, in August. Their arrival inspection identified a long list of things that needed repairing and renovating along with the good news that the underside wasn’t completely rotten. Only partially rotten! After this car’s lived mostly outdoors in Cornwall since I imported it in 2002 this was a major plus.

The conversation with Adrian Crawford revealed that I’m probably looking at about £10k for all the engine, suspension, braking, steering and bodywork (if I go all the way up to a windscreen out re-spray)  So just the price of a half-decent used Boxster then!

There aren’t going to be any more of these cars and I gave the go-ahead after a good deal of hand wringing.

Work up to now has seen the engine examined, partly stripped, water pump replaced with all belts & fluids replaced, new brake discs and pads. Underside rot repairs carried out and under seal applied. Drive shafts stripped and refitted with all new gaskets and gaiters. Suspension bushes replaced and new BC racing coilover suspension ordered, steering bar universal joint removed and sent for renovation and replaced. I had my original Cup 1 wheels refurbished and new Toyo Proxes T1-Rs fitted; these will replace the Boxster alloys that you can see in these photos. I was in touch with them yesterday and the coilovers are due in the next couple of days. We’re in the process of deciding how the majority of the bodywork repairs should be tackled and where.

I took the wheels up to Saltash yesterday and discussed the state of the bodywork with Mark. I'm 99% certain of opting for a full respray with the windscreen needing to come out to treat some rust that’s appearing around the frame. A thumb-sized section around the off-side rear hatch locating pin will need to be cut out and re-made to treat rot there too.

Mark's fitted the coilovers. These are the ones that are now on (I forgot to take photos of them in situ)

Using the coil over adjusters I’m going for a more standard M030/Club Sport ride height. Gratuitous 968 Club Sport photo:

It’s been a year nearly since I got the car back. I haven’t made any more changes. None seem to be needed. There’s plenty of power and the updated and lowered suspension means it grips really well on fairly high profile (55/50) Toyo Proxes T1Rs. No big road trips materialised unfortunately and I’ve driven the car far too little. The starter does play up every so often so I’ll have to ask for that to be looked at when it’s in for an annual service.

Beautiful looking car which will only ever go up in value.

Glad you got rid of the boxter alloys though!

Oi!! I was quite happy with the Boxster alloys 😁 But yes, better with the originals.

The Continental CD Radio arrived in the post today. Happy times!

Removed the Becker Mexico cassette radio and the Continental slotted in with its metal sleeve with a bit of wriggling. DIN connectors clicked in easily enough and power came straight on with the ignition key to the Acc position. Mobile phone paired quickly and I had my dialled numbers up straight away. Hands free works okay even without the mic extension fitted, that's one for the weekend. Also need to install the DAB aerial. There's the fold-out one that came with the radio and I also bought a new roof bee sting antenna that will need me to get access behind the headlining to replace the old FM/AM type. The unit streams Spotify or Amazon Music from my phone though, so I have no shortage of music options now. Can make up a small mp3 thumb USB drive for when there's no DAB or 4G signal.

Another tech update: All rear lights and front sidelights and indicators upgraded to LEDs. I can't see a route to LED headlights due to the pop-up light housing design and because they'd blind oncoming traffic, no EC approved aftermarket LED either. The front front fog lights/additional high beams could be done, but they're pretty decent already. Osram NightBreaker Unlimiteds fitted for the dipped/main beams.

  • Rear tail lights and fog light (R) all LED

  • Below: Old incandescent bulbs of varying ages and makes on the right. Even in daylight the new LEDs on the left look brighter.
